The Large-Clawed Scorpion (Scorpio maurus) is a medium-sized desert and semi-arid scorpion native to North Africa and the Middle East. It is one of the few commonly kept scorpions outside the large tropical forest and North American desert groups, and its care requirements differ from both. It is a burrowing species that tolerates a range of arid to semi-arid conditions and is occasionally kept by hobbyists interested in Old World scorpion diversity.

A Note on Subspecies

What Makes Large-Clawed Scorpions Unique
- Size. At 2–4 inches, Large-Clawed Scorpions are significantly smaller than Emperor, Asian Forest, or Desert Hairy Scorpions. This makes them suitable for smaller enclosures but also means they require appropriately sized prey and furnishings.
- Old World origin. As a North African and Middle Eastern species, S. maurus represents a different biogeographic group than the African tropical forest scorpions (Pandinus) or North American desert scorpions (Hadrurus). It adds genuine diversity to a scorpion collection.
- Burrowing behavior. Large-Clawed Scorpions are dedicated burrowers. Deep substrate is essential regardless of the relatively small enclosure footprint.
- Husbandry documentation. Captive husbandry information for S. maurus is less standardized than for Emperor or Desert Hairy Scorpions. Keepers should approach care with appropriate caution and consult specialist sources where possible.
Enclosure
Large-Clawed Scorpions are small terrestrial burrowers. A 5–10 gallon equivalent enclosure is appropriate for a single adult. Floor space matters more than height. The enclosure must have a secure lid. Well-ventilated terrestrial enclosures work well — avoid setups designed primarily to retain high humidity.

Substrate
Deep, burrowable substrate is essential. S. maurus comes from arid to semi-arid environments and does not require the moisture-retentive substrate of tropical forest species, but some subspecies benefit from a slight moisture gradient deeper in the substrate.
- Depth: Several inches of deep, compactable substrate; 4–6+ inches is a useful practical target for adults
- Composition: Sandy or loamy substrate — play sand, reptile sand, or a sand/organic topsoil mix. A slightly damp layer deeper in the substrate can provide a moisture gradient for drinking and humidity regulation without making the surface wet.

Temperature
Large-Clawed Scorpions do well at 75–88°F with a warm-side gradient. A heat mat on the side of the enclosure or a low-wattage heat lamp can provide the gradient. All heat sources must be thermostat-controlled.

Humidity
Maintain a dry enclosure with good ventilation. A moisture gradient deeper in the substrate — achieved by dampening the lower substrate layer during setup — allows the scorpion to regulate hydration through burrowing behavior. Do not mist the surface regularly. Provide a small, shallow water dish.

Feeding
Large-Clawed Scorpions eat appropriately sized live or pre-killed insects. Given their smaller size, prey items should be correspondingly small — small crickets, mealworms, or appropriately sized dubia nymphs. Prey should be no larger than the scorpion's carapace. Remove uneaten prey within 24 hours.

Handling
