Successful incubation comes down to three things: stable temperature, adequate humidity, and clean air. Get those right and most healthy eggs will hatch. Get them wrong and even a perfect clutch can fail. This guide covers what you need to know before you set up an incubator, how to choose the right size for your breeding program, and species-specific parameters for the most commonly bred reptiles.
How Incubation Works
Reptile eggs are porous and exchange gas and moisture with their environment throughout development. Unlike bird eggs, most reptile eggs should not be rotated after collection — maintain the orientation in which the eggs were found unless species-specific guidance says otherwise. Mark the top of each egg with a pencil at collection and keep that orientation throughout incubation.
Temperature drives development speed and, in many species, sex determination. Small deviations from target temperature compound over a 60–90 day incubation period. A unit that swings 2°F throughout the day is not the same as one that holds to 0.1°F — and that difference shows up in hatch rates.
What to Look for in an Incubator
Proportional Thermostat
A proportional thermostat modulates heating output continuously rather than switching fully on and off. The result is a stable set point without the temperature spikes that on/off thermostats produce. For reptile eggs, this is the single most important feature in an incubator.
Active Air Circulation

Species-Specific Incubation Parameters
Temperature and humidity targets vary by species. The ranges below reflect commonly used captive incubation parameters as a starting point. Actual conditions depend on your incubation method, container ventilation, media moisture, and egg appearance — adjust based on observed results and species-specific guidance from experienced breeders.
Ball Python (Python regius)

Incubation Media
Eggs need a substrate that holds moisture without becoming waterlogged. Common options:

- Perlite — holds less moisture than vermiculite; used for species or methods that call for drier conditions.

Eggs are typically half-buried in media rather than fully covered. Monitor eggs periodically — denting suggests dehydration; sweating or condensation on the egg surface may indicate excess moisture. Add water to the media, not directly to the egg.
Common Problems
- Eggs denting: Usually dehydration. Add a small amount of water to the media, not directly to the egg.
- Mold on eggs: Surface mold on otherwise healthy eggs can sometimes be carefully wiped with a dry cloth. Widespread mold with soft, discolored eggs typically indicates a failed clutch.
