Step 1: Plan Before You Buy

The most expensive mistake in reef keeping is buying equipment without a plan. Before purchasing anything, decide:

Step 2: Gather Your Equipment

A complete reef system requires the following core equipment. Research each category before purchasing — the right choice depends on your tank size and coral goals.

  • Tank and stand: Choose a tank sized for your space and goals. Ensure the stand is rated for the weight — saltwater weighs approximately 8.5 pounds per gallon plus rock, sand, and equipment.

Step 3: Set Up the Tank and Plumbing

  • Install the heater, return pump, and any equipment that goes in the sump.
  • Position wave makers on the tank walls but do not run them until the tank is filled.

Step 4: Mix Your First Saltwater

  • Test alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium of the mixed saltwater before adding it to the tank.

Step 5: Add Rock and Substrate

  • Add substrate first — 1–1.5 inches of aragonite sand for most reef tanks. Add live sand directly without rinsing; rinse dry sand thoroughly before use.
  • Build your aquascape with reef rock. Use reef-safe epoxy or aquascape putty to bond structures. Leave space between rock and glass for flow and cleaning access.
  • Aim for an open aquascape with good flow paths through the rockwork rather than a solid wall of rock.

Step 6: Cycle the Tank

The nitrogen cycle establishes the beneficial bacteria that convert ammonia (toxic) to nitrite (toxic) to nitrate (manageable). This process must complete before adding fish or corals.

  • Add an ammonia source to start the cycle. Pure ammonia (unscented, no surfactants) or a reputable bottled bacteria product with an ammonia source are the most predictable methods. A small piece of raw shrimp also works but can be messier to manage.
  • Test ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate every few days. The cycle is complete when ammonia and nitrite both read 0 ppm and nitrate is detectable.

Step 7: Dial In Equipment

Before adding livestock, verify all equipment is functioning correctly:
