20-Gallon African Dwarf Frog Community Build

African Dwarf Frogs are fully aquatic amphibians that can coexist with appropriate community fish in a well-planned aquarium. This build combines three species with compatible requirements and complementary roles: African Dwarf Frogs as the centerpiece, Neon Tetras as a midwater school, and Corydoras as a bottom-dwelling school. This combination is genuinely compatible rather than a compromise — shared water parameters, peaceful temperaments, and manageable feeding behavior make it work in practice, not just on paper.


Stocking Plan

This build is designed around two ecological zones:

  • Top / midwater: Neon Tetras — active schooling fish that occupy the water column above the frogs
  • Bottom: Corydoras and African Dwarf Frogs — peaceful species sharing the lower tank; compatibility comes from non-aggressive behavior and managed feeding rather than strict spatial separation

Recommended stocking for a 20-gallon long:

  • 3–4 African Dwarf Frogs
  • 10 Neon Tetras
  • 6 Corydoras (one species — Bronze Cory, Sterbai, or another species whose temperature range fits 72–78°F)

This stocking gives you proper group sizes for all three species without pushing bioload aggressively. African Dwarf Frogs share water temperature requirements with Neon Tetras and appropriately selected Corydoras in the 72–78°F range. All three species are peaceful and do not predate on each other at adult size.

Note on Cory species: temperature range matters. Some Corydoras, including Peppered Corys, are more cool-water oriented and are not the cleanest fit if you are targeting the mid-to-upper range of this build’s temperature window. Bronze Cory (C. aeneus) and Sterbai (C. sterbai) are reliable choices within this range.


Tank

A 20-gallon long (30” x 12” x 12”) is the preferred footprint for this build. The longer, shallower profile gives Corydoras and African Dwarf Frogs more bottom surface area, and makes it easier for frogs to reach the surface to breathe without expending excessive energy. A standard 20-gallon tall can work but is less ideal.

A secure lid is essential. African Dwarf Frogs are escape-prone and will exit through any gap. A glass lid or tight-fitting mesh cover is required.


Substrate

Use a fine, smooth substrate appropriate for Corydoras and safe for frogs. Options:

  • Fine sand (pool filter sand, play sand, or aquarium-specific fine sand) — ideal for Corydoras to sift through without barbel damage, and safe for frogs
  • Small, smooth rounded gravel — acceptable if particle size is small enough that frogs cannot accidentally ingest pieces during feeding

Avoid coarse, sharp, or large-particle substrates. Corydoras barbels are sensitive and will degrade on rough substrate over time. African Dwarf Frogs rest on and move across the substrate and can be injured by sharp edges.

Substrate depth of 1.5–2 inches is appropriate. Deeper substrate can create anaerobic zones in a lightly planted setup.


Plants

Live plants improve water quality, reduce algae competition, and provide resting spots and cover. Recommended plants for this build:

  • Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) — attaches to hardscape, low light, undemanding
  • Anubias — attach to wood or rock, extremely tolerant, broad leaves provide resting surfaces at midwater
  • Java Moss — attach to hardscape, provides cover at lower levels
  • Amazon Sword — background plant, provides vertical structure
  • Floating plants (frogbit, dwarf water lettuce) — optional; diffuse surface light and provide cover, but ensure frogs can still access the surface easily

African Dwarf Frogs benefit from plant structure near the surface — they like to rest with minimal effort needed to breathe. Dense planting at lower levels also helps Corydoras feel secure.


Hardscape

Hardscape serves both aesthetic and functional purposes in this build:

  • Provide caves and sheltered areas at substrate level for Corydoras and frogs to retreat into
  • Break up sightlines across the tank bottom
  • Provide attachment points for Anubias and Java Fern
  • Create midwater structure for Neon Tetras to school around

Appropriate materials include smooth river stones, aquarium-safe driftwood (spider wood, mopani wood), and ceramic caves or hides. Avoid sharp-edged rock with frogs present.


Filtration

Filtration is the most important compatibility consideration in this build. African Dwarf Frogs are weak swimmers and can be pulled into or stressed by high-flow filter intakes.

Requirements:

  • Gentle flow rate — aim for 3–4x tank volume per hour rather than the higher turnover used in fish-only setups
  • Covered or sponge-protected intake — cover all intakes with a pre-filter sponge; bare intakes can trap or injure frogs
  • Sponge filter or hang-on-back with sponge intake cover — both are appropriate; a dual sponge filter is the safest option for frogs and provides additional surface area for beneficial bacteria

Corydoras and Neon Tetras both tolerate gentle flow well. This is not a high-flow species combination.


Heating

Target water temperature: 72–78°F. All three species in this build are comfortable in this range when Cory species are selected appropriately.

  • A 100W adjustable heater is appropriate for a 20-gallon in most room-temperature environments
  • Use a separate thermometer to verify actual water temperature — do not rely solely on heater dial markings
  • Position the heater where flow from the filter will distribute heat evenly

Lighting

Moderate lighting supports the planted setup and gives animals shaded areas for cover. A standard LED aquarium fixture on an 8–10 hour photoperiod is appropriate. If using floating plants, ensure they do not completely shade the lower tank.


Feeding

Feeding is the most operationally important aspect of this build. African Dwarf Frogs are slow, opportunistic feeders with poor eyesight. In a community tank with faster fish, frogs will reliably lose access to food unless feeding is managed deliberately.

Target Feeding the Frogs

Use a turkey baster, feeding pipette, or long feeding tongs to deliver food directly in front of each frog. Sinking pellets, frozen brine shrimp, and frozen daphnia are appropriate staple frog foods. Frozen bloodworms can be offered as an occasional food. Feed frogs separately from the main feeding event, or feed fish at the surface while simultaneously delivering frog food at substrate level.

Corydoras

Corydoras should receive sinking wafers or pellets that reach the bottom. They will also scavenge uneaten food, which helps with tank cleanliness, but should not be expected to thrive on scavenging alone. They are a bottom-dwelling fish that require their own deliberate feeding, not a biological waste management system.

Neon Tetras

Feed high-quality small flake or micropellet at the surface. Neon Tetras are fast and will consume most surface food quickly, which helps prevent excess food from reaching and fouling the substrate.

Feeding Frequency

Feed frogs 2–3 times per week — they do not require daily feeding and overfeeding causes water quality problems. Feed fish once or twice daily in small amounts.


Introduction Order

  1. Cycle the tank first — do not introduce any livestock until the nitrogen cycle is complete and ammonia and nitrite read zero
  2. Corydoras first — establish the bottom community; they are hardy and will help confirm the tank is stable
  3. Neon Tetras second — add the school once parameters are confirmed stable
  4. African Dwarf Frogs last — frogs are more sensitive to water quality and benefit from being introduced into an established, stable system; introducing them last also gives the fish time to establish feeding behavior before the slower frogs are added

Quarantine new livestock before introduction where possible, particularly frogs, which can carry chytrid fungus.


Optional Additions

Nerite Snails are a suitable addition — effective algae grazers, do not reproduce in freshwater, and are not at risk from the frogs or fish in this build.

Cherry Shrimp can be added with the caveat that African Dwarf Frogs will eat small or juvenile shrimp given the opportunity. Adult cherry shrimp have a better survival rate, and dense planting provides refuge. This is a manageable risk rather than an absolute incompatibility, but shrimp losses will occur.


Maintenance

  • Water changes: 25–30% weekly; African Dwarf Frogs are sensitive to water quality and do not tolerate high nitrate accumulation well
  • Substrate cleaning: use a gentle siphon; avoid disturbing resting frogs
  • Filter maintenance: rinse sponge media in old tank water (not tap water) monthly to preserve beneficial bacteria
  • Check lid integrity: inspect for gaps regularly; frogs will find and use any opening
  • Monitor frog body condition: frogs that are not being target-fed adequately will lose weight visibly; check regularly that each frog is feeding
