Scorpion Molting Guide

Molting — shedding the old exoskeleton to grow a new one — is one of the most critical and vulnerable periods in a scorpion's life. Understanding what to expect before, during, and after a molt is one of the most important things a scorpion keeper can know. Most molting problems are caused by keeper interference or incorrect husbandry, not by anything inherently wrong with the animal.

Why Scorpions Molt

Scorpions, like all arthropods, have a rigid exoskeleton that cannot expand. To grow, they must periodically shed this exoskeleton entirely and replace it with a new, larger one. Juveniles molt periodically as they grow, with the interval between molts generally increasing as they approach maturity. Once a scorpion reaches adulthood, it typically no longer molts.

Pre-Molt Signs

Scorpions typically show behavioral changes in the days to weeks before a molt:

  • Food refusal — the most common and reliable pre-molt indicator; a scorpion that suddenly stops eating after a consistent feeding history is often approaching molt
  • Reduced activity — spending more time in the hide or burrow, less visible and less responsive
  • Burrowing or sealing the hide — many scorpions will burrow deeply or block the entrance to their hide with substrate before molting
  • Dull or slightly different coloration — less reliable than behavioral signs, but some keepers notice a slight change in appearance

Not all scorpions show obvious pre-molt signs. Some will molt with little warning. If your scorpion has refused food for an extended period and is otherwise behaving normally, pre-molt is a likely explanation — particularly in younger animals.

What to Do During Pre-Molt

  • Remove all live prey immediately. Live insects can injure or kill a scorpion during or after molt when the animal is soft and vulnerable. This is the single most important pre-molt action.
  • Do not disturb the enclosure. Avoid unnecessary handling, rearranging, or cleaning during this period.
  • Maintain correct humidity. For tropical species, ensure the substrate remains appropriately damp. Low humidity during molt can cause the old exoskeleton to stick and result in a failed or incomplete molt.
  • Ensure water is available. Keep the water dish filled.

The Molt Itself

Molting typically happens in the burrow or hide, out of sight. The process can take anywhere from a few hours to over a day depending on the species and individual. The scorpion will lie on its back or side during the molt as it works free of the old exoskeleton.

Do not intervene. A scorpion that appears to be struggling during molt should be left alone. Interference almost always causes more harm than the molt problem itself. The only exception is if live prey is present — remove it immediately.

After the Molt

A freshly molted scorpion is soft, pale, and extremely vulnerable. The new exoskeleton takes days to weeks to fully harden depending on the species and size of the animal.

  • Do not feed for at least 1–2 weeks after molt, or until the exoskeleton has visibly darkened and hardened
  • Do not handle a freshly molted scorpion
  • Keep live prey out of the enclosure until the animal is fully hardened
  • Ensure water access — scorpions often drink after molting
  • The old exoskeleton (the molt) can be left in the enclosure briefly or removed — it is not harmful

Common Molting Problems

Incomplete or stuck molt

Parts of the old exoskeleton remain attached after the molt. This is most commonly caused by insufficient humidity during the molt (for tropical species) or disturbance. A scorpion with stuck shed should be left alone in a correctly humidified enclosure — do not attempt to manually remove stuck exoskeleton pieces, as this can cause serious injury.

Failed molt

The scorpion dies during or shortly after the molt. This can result from incorrect environmental conditions, disturbance during the molt, underlying health issues, or live prey in the enclosure. Ensuring correct husbandry before and during pre-molt is the best prevention.

Extended food refusal after molt

Some scorpions take several weeks to resume feeding after a molt. This is normal. Do not attempt to force-feed. Offer appropriately sized prey once the exoskeleton has hardened and remove it if refused.

Species-Specific Notes

Molting frequency and duration vary by species. Younger scorpions generally molt more frequently, with molts becoming less frequent as they approach adulthood. Large species like Emperor and Dictator Scorpions may take longer to complete a molt and longer to harden afterward than smaller species. Desert species may show different pre-molt behavior than tropical forest species.
