The Emperor Scorpion (Pandinus imperator) is one of the best-known scorpions in the hobby and a common recommendation for new scorpion keepers. It is large, impressive, and — relative to most scorpions — more tolerant of handling than many other species. Its venom is generally regarded as relatively low in medical significance, although stings can be painful and individual reactions vary. It is a tropical forest species with specific humidity and substrate requirements that differ substantially from desert scorpions.

What Makes Emperor Scorpions Unique
Emperor Scorpions are a common beginner scorpion recommendation for several reasons:
- Size. At 5–8 inches, they are among the largest scorpions in the hobby — visually impressive and easier to observe than smaller species.
- Temperament. Emperors are generally slower-moving and more tolerant of disturbance than many other scorpion species. They are not docile animals, but experienced keepers often handle them with appropriate caution. They are more handleable than most other scorpions in the hobby.
- Venom profile. Their venom is generally regarded as relatively low in medical significance compared to many other scorpion species, making them a more appropriate choice for new keepers than medically significant species. This does not mean stings are harmless — individual reactions vary and allergic responses are possible.
- Communal potential. Emperors have been kept communally under specific conditions — large enclosures, adequate hides, and consistent feeding. This is not recommended for new keepers and carries cannibalism risk, but it is more feasible with this species than most.
Enclosure
Emperor Scorpions are terrestrial burrowers. Floor space matters more than height. A 10–20 gallon equivalent enclosure is appropriate for a single adult; larger is better if space allows. The enclosure must have a secure, tight-fitting lid — Emperors can exploit silicone seams, mesh, and furnishings to escape.
Front-opening enclosures are preferred for ease of maintenance without disturbing the scorpion from above. Adequate ventilation is important to prevent stagnant air while maintaining humidity.

Substrate
Substrate is critical for Emperor Scorpions. They are burrowers that require deep, moisture-retentive substrate to maintain humidity and exhibit natural behavior.
- Depth: 4–6+ inches minimum — enough for the scorpion to burrow fully
- Composition: Coconut fiber (coir) is the most widely recommended base. It can be used alone or mixed with organic topsoil, sphagnum moss, or similar materials. The substrate should be damp enough to hold a burrow but not waterlogged or soggy.
- Avoid: Sand, dry substrates, or anything that doesn't retain moisture — these are inappropriate for a tropical forest species

Temperature
Emperor Scorpions thrive at 75–85°F. Many homes fall within this range without supplemental heating. If ambient temperatures drop below 75°F, a low-wattage heat mat placed on the side of the enclosure (not underneath — scorpions burrow and can overheat from below) is appropriate. All heat sources must be thermostat-controlled.

Humidity
Emperor Scorpions require high humidity — 70–80%+ is the target range. Maintain humidity by:
- Keeping part of the substrate consistently damp (not the entire enclosure — a gradient is healthier than uniform saturation)
- Providing a shallow water dish at all times
- Misting one side of the enclosure periodically as needed
Monitor with a hygrometer placed at substrate level. Low humidity causes dehydration and shedding problems; poor ventilation combined with excessive moisture can lead to mold, microbial growth, and mite issues. Ventilation and humidity must be balanced.

Feeding
Emperor Scorpions eat appropriately sized live or pre-killed insects. Crickets and dubia roaches are the most commonly used feeders. Prey should be no larger than the scorpion's carapace. Remove uneaten prey within 24 hours — live insects can stress or injure a scorpion, particularly during molt.
- Adults: every 1–2 weeks
- Juveniles: every 5–7 days

Water
Provide a shallow water dish at all times. It should be shallow enough that the scorpion cannot drown — a small reptile dish or similar works well for adults. Keep it clean and refill regularly.
Hides
Provide at least one surface hide in addition to allowing burrowing. Cork bark flats, half-logs, and flat rocks are all appropriate. Emperors spend most of their time hidden or burrowed — a well-furnished enclosure with adequate cover reduces stress and encourages natural behavior.

Handling
Emperor Scorpions are more tolerant of handling than most scorpion species, but they are still venomous animals capable of stinging without warning. Handle only with appropriate caution and never when the scorpion is in pre-molt or has recently molted. Molting
