Complete Amphibian Setup Checklist: Everything You Need Before Bringing Your Amphibian Home
Amphibians are among the most diverse and rewarding animals in the hobby — but their care requirements vary more dramatically between species than almost any other group. A Pacman Frog lives in a simple terrestrial tub with moist substrate; a Dart Frog lives in a bioactive planted vivarium with precise humidity cycling; an Axolotl lives fully aquatic in a chilled tank. This checklist covers the core equipment categories that apply across amphibian keeping, with species-specific notes throughout.

1. Enclosure

Terrestrial enclosure (plastic tub or glass terrarium)
Simple, affordable, and easy to clean. Plastic tubs with ventilated lids retain humidity well and are the preferred setup for many terrestrial frogs. Glass terrariums offer better visibility and are suitable for display setups.
Best for: Pacman Frogs, Fire-Bellied Toads
Tall glass terrarium (arboreal)
Height matters more than floor space for climbing species. Front-opening doors make maintenance easier and reduce stress during access. Screen or partial-screen tops allow airflow while retaining some humidity.
Best for: White's Tree Frogs, Dart Frogs
Bioactive vivarium
A living enclosure with live plants, a drainage layer, and microfauna (springtails and isopods) that break down waste. More complex to set up, and still requires regular monitoring and occasional intervention — but lower-maintenance in day-to-day cleaning once established. The preferred approach for Dart Frogs and increasingly popular for other species.
Best for: Dart Frogs, White's Tree Frogs
Aquarium (fully aquatic)
Standard glass aquarium with filtration. Axolotls are fully aquatic and require a standard aquarium setup — not a terrarium.
Best for: Axolotls
Paludarium (semi-aquatic)
Part land, part water. Requires more planning but suits species that need both terrestrial and aquatic zones.

2. Lighting
Most amphibians are crepuscular or nocturnal and do not require UVB lighting the way diurnal reptiles do — but a consistent photoperiod matters for all species, and low-output UVB is increasingly recommended as beneficial even for nocturnal species.
Photoperiod:
A 12-hour light/dark cycle is appropriate for most amphibians. Use a timer to maintain consistency — irregular light cycles can disrupt feeding and breeding behavior.
UVB:
- Dart Frogs — low-output UVB (5.0 or 6%) is recommended; they are active during the day and benefit from UVB exposure
- White's Tree Frogs, Pacman Frogs, Fire-Bellied Toads — low-output UVB is beneficial but not universally required; D3 can be supplemented through diet
- Axolotls — no UVB required; avoid bright lighting as axolotls are sensitive to light and prefer dim conditions

3. Temperature Management
Amphibians are ectotherms but most species kept in captivity prefer cooler temperatures than reptiles. Overheating is a more common problem than being too cold for many amphibian species.
Temperature ranges by species group:
- Pacman Frogs — 75–82°F ambient; a low-wattage heat mat on the side of the enclosure can supplement in cool rooms; avoid sustained temperatures at the top of the range
- White's Tree Frogs — 75–85°F; room temperature in most homes; avoid exceeding 88°F
- Dart Frogs — 72–80°F; sensitive to heat; do not exceed 82°F
- Fire-Bellied Toads — 65–75°F; prefer cooler conditions; room temperature in most homes
- Axolotls — 60–68°F; require a chiller in most homes; cannot tolerate temperatures above 72°F for extended periods
For species that need supplemental heat, a low-wattage heat mat on the side (not the bottom) of the enclosure is the most common approach. Always connect to a thermostat.

4. Humidity & Misting
Humidity is the most critical environmental parameter for most amphibians. Amphibians absorb water through their skin — low humidity causes dehydration and shedding problems even when a water dish is present.
Humidity requirements by species:
- Pacman Frogs — 60–80%; moist substrate is the primary humidity source; mist lightly every 1–2 days
- White's Tree Frogs — 50–70% with daily humidity cycling (mist in the evening, allow to drop during the day)
- Dart Frogs — high humidity (commonly 80–100% after misting), with good ventilation to prevent stagnant, saturated conditions; mist 1–2 times daily or use an automated misting system
- Fire-Bellied Toads — 60–80%; semi-aquatic setup provides ambient humidity naturally
- Axolotls — fully aquatic; humidity is not a concern
Misting options:
- Hand mister — adequate for most species with simple humidity needs; requires daily attention
- Automated misting system — programmable, consistent, and strongly recommended for Dart Frogs and other high-humidity species

5. Substrate
Substrate for amphibians must retain moisture without becoming waterlogged, support burrowing where needed, and be safe if accidentally ingested.
Common substrate types:
- Coconut fiber — excellent moisture retention, naturalistic, safe for most terrestrial and semi-arboreal species; the standard for Pacman Frogs
- Sphagnum moss — outstanding moisture retention; used as a top layer or mixed with coco fiber; ideal for high-humidity species
- Bioactive substrate mix — a layered system with drainage layer, substrate mix, and live plants; used in bioactive vivariums
- Drainage layer — LECA, hydroballs, or false bottom; sits below the substrate in bioactive setups to prevent waterlogging
- Fine sand or bare bottom — for Axolotls; fine sand is preferred over gravel to reduce impaction risk
- Paper towel — for quarantine, hatchlings, and monitoring health
Avoid: calcium sand, cedar or pine products, gravel for most frog species, and any substrate treated with pesticides or fertilizers.

6. Decor, Hides & Plants
Amphibians need cover and hiding spots to feel secure. A stressed amphibian will refuse food, fail to thrive, and be more susceptible to disease. Decor also plays a functional role in maintaining humidity and providing climbing structure for arboreal species.
What to include:
- Hides — cork bark flats, half-logs, or coconut hides; essential for all terrestrial and semi-arboreal species
- Cork bark — naturalistic, holds moisture, provides climbing and hiding surfaces; a staple in amphibian setups
- Live plants — essential for Dart Frog vivariums; beneficial for White's Tree Frogs and other arboreal species; bromeliads, pothos, and ficus are commonly used
- Artificial plants — a lower-maintenance alternative for species that don't require a bioactive setup
- Climbing branches — for arboreal species; White's Tree Frogs and Dart Frogs use vertical space extensively
7. Water Setup
All amphibians need access to clean water free of chlorine and chloramines, which are harmful to amphibians. Treat tap water with a dechlorinator before use in water dishes, misting, or aquatic setups.
By species type:
- Terrestrial frogs (Pacman Frog) — a shallow water dish large enough to soak in; change daily; moist substrate reduces soaking frequency
- Arboreal frogs (White's Tree Frog) — a shallow water dish on the enclosure floor; misting provides additional hydration
- Dart Frogs — small water features or shallow pools in the vivarium; misting provides most hydration

8. Food & Supplements
Most amphibians are insectivores. Gut-loading feeder insects before feeding significantly improves their nutritional value — feeder insects alone are nutritionally incomplete without proper gut-loading and supplementation.
Common feeder insects:
- Crickets — the staple feeder for most frog species; widely available, easy to gut-load
- Dubia roaches — higher nutritional value than crickets; longer-lived and easier to keep
- Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) — high calcium content; good as a supplement or primary feeder
- Fruit flies (Drosophila) — essential for Dart Frogs and small juvenile frogs; flightless varieties only
- Waxworms and mealworms — high fat; use as occasional treats, not staple feeders
Axolotl feeding:

9. Temperature & Humidity Monitoring
Accurate monitoring is essential. Amphibians are sensitive to temperature and humidity fluctuations — conditions that feel fine to a human hand can be outside safe ranges for the animal.
- Digital hygrometer — monitor ambient humidity; place at mid-enclosure height for arboreal species
- Digital thermometer with probe — verify ambient and substrate temperatures

10. Cleaning & Maintenance
Amphibian enclosures require regular spot-cleaning and periodic deep-cleans. Bioactive setups reduce the frequency of full substrate changes but still require monitoring, plant maintenance, and occasional intervention — they are not set-and-forget.
What you need:
- Amphibian-safe disinfectant — F10SC or diluted chlorhexidine; avoid anything with phenols, ammonia, or strong fragrances; rinse thoroughly
- Dechlorinated water — for misting, water dish changes, and cleaning; always treat tap water before it contacts the animal or enclosure
- Dedicated cleaning tools — never share with household cleaning equipment
- Spare substrate — for spot-cleaning and partial substrate changes
Amphibians are highly sensitive to chemical residues — rinse all surfaces thoroughly after disinfecting and allow to dry or air out before returning the animal.

Set up and stabilize the enclosure before the animal arrives. Amphibians are sensitive to environmental stress — a stable, established enclosure reduces acclimation stress significantly.
