Pacman frogs are one of the most popular pet amphibians in the world. Hardy, low-maintenance, and visually striking — but they have specific husbandry requirements that, when met consistently, allow them to live 10 years or more in captivity.

Quick Reference

Feeding Every 3-5 days (adults)
UVB Low UVB recommended
Experience level Beginner-friendly

Enclosure Setup

Pacman frogs need floor space and substrate depth, not height. A 10-gallon is the minimum for a juvenile; a 20-gallon wide is recommended for an adult female. Front-opening glass terrariums retain humidity better than screen-top enclosures. See our Best Amphibian Enclosures guide.

Substrate

Substrate is the most critical element of a Pacman frog enclosure. It must be moist but not waterlogged, at least 4-6 inches deep, and free of fertilizers and additives. Coconut fiber is the most widely recommended option. A mix of coconut fiber and additive-free organic topsoil adds density for stable burrows. See our Best Amphibian Substrates guide.

Temperature and Heating

Pacman frogs thrive at 75-82°F during the day and tolerate 70-75°F at night. No basking spot is needed. In most homes no supplemental heating is required if the room stays above 72°F. If needed, an under-tank heater on a thermostat placed on the side of the enclosure (not the bottom) is the most practical solution.

Humidity

Target 60-80% humidity. Consistently moist substrate is the primary driver of humidity. Mist lightly when the surface begins to dry. An automatic misting system on a timer helps maintain consistency. Monitor with a digital hygrometer at substrate level. See our Best Misting Systems and Best Reptile and Amphibian Hygrometers guides.

UVB Lighting

Pacman frogs are nocturnal with low UVB requirements, but current best practice recommends low-level UVB (T5 HO 5.0 or 6% bulb) rather than none at all. Maintain a 12-hour light/dark cycle. See our Best UVB Lights for Amphibians guide.

Feeding

Pacman frogs are ambush predators. Feed juveniles every 1-2 days and adults every 3-5 days. Prey should be no wider than the frog's head. Crickets and dubia roaches are the best staple feeders. Dust all feeders with calcium at every feeding and a multivitamin 1-2 times per week. Pacman frogs are prone to obesity — monitor body condition regularly. See our Best Amphibian Food and Feeders and Best Calcium and Vitamin Supplements guides.

Health and Common Issues

  • Metabolic bone disease: Prevented by consistent calcium dusting and appropriate UVB or D3 supplementation.
  • Bacterial infections (red leg): Caused by poor substrate hygiene or waterlogged conditions.
  • Obesity: Feed adults every 3-5 days and avoid waxworms as a staple.
  • Estivation: Pacman frogs may form a cocoon and become dormant if the enclosure becomes too dry. Maintain consistent substrate moisture.
