UVB lighting is less commonly discussed for amphibians than for reptiles, but research increasingly shows that many amphibian species benefit from low-level UVB exposure. Amphibians synthesize vitamin D3 through UVB in the wild, and while dietary supplementation can partially compensate, providing appropriate UVB is considered best practice for most captive amphibian species.
Do Amphibians Need UVB?
The answer depends on the species. Amphibians fall into three broad categories:
- Diurnal species — such as dart frogs and some salamanders — benefit most from UVB and should be provided with low-level UVB lighting.
- Crepuscular and nocturnal species — such as Pacman frogs and White's tree frogs — have lower UVB requirements but still benefit from low-level UVB for vitamin D3 synthesis.
- Fully aquatic species — such as axolotls — generally do not require UVB and may be stressed by bright lighting.
Current best practice for most captive amphibians is to provide low-level UVB (UVI 0.5-1.0) rather than no UVB at all, unless the species is fully aquatic.
What to Look for in an Amphibian UVB Light
- UVB output level: Most amphibians require low UVB — a T5 HO 5.0 or 6% bulb at appropriate distance. High-output desert bulbs (10.0, 12%) are too intense for most amphibian species.
- Bulb type: T5 HO bulbs produce more UVB output than T8 bulbs and are preferred for larger enclosures. T8 bulbs are adequate for smaller setups.
- Fixture quality: A quality reflector fixture significantly increases usable UVB output. Fixtures without reflectors waste a large portion of the bulb's output.
- Bulb lifespan: UVB output degrades before the bulb visibly dims. Replace every 6-12 months even if the bulb still appears to be working.
- Heat output: Many amphibians require lower temperatures than reptiles. Choose fixtures that do not produce significant heat.
