A tall vivarium designed for arboreal species wastes space for a terrestrial frog and may make it harder to maintain appropriate humidity at substrate level. Dart Frogs (Dendrobates, Ranitomeya, Oophaga spp.) — Terrestrial / Climbing

Dart frogs are small, active frogs, but enclosure requirements vary significantly by genus and species. Some species use vertical space extensively — Ranitomeya in particular are active climbers and shouldn't be treated simply as ground frogs. Floor space is important across the group, but usable vertical structure (plants, cork bark, branches) matters for many species as well.

White's Tree Frog (Litoria caerulea) — Arboreal

Large, robust arboreal species. Adults reach 3–4 inches. Vertical height is the priority — an 18x18x24 inch enclosure is a commonly used baseline for a single adult. For multiple animals, provide more usable volume and climbing structure rather than crowding into a minimum-sized enclosure. Branches, cork bark, and elevated perches are important. Red-Eyed Tree Frog (Agalychnis callidryas) — Arboreal

Iconic arboreal species. Adults reach 2–3 inches. Similar orientation to White's Tree Frog — vertical height, climbing structure, and appropriate humidity. Pacman Frog (Ceratophrys spp.) — Terrestrial / Fossorial Ambush Predator

Pacman frogs are sedentary ambush predators that spend most of their time partially buried in substrate. They don't need large enclosures — a 10-gallon equivalent is workable for a single adult, with larger enclosures for bigger individuals. Deep, moist substrate is more important than floor area. Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) — Fully Aquatic

Axolotls are fully aquatic and need a standard aquarium rather than a vivarium. Older care recommendations commonly cite a 20-gallon long as a minimum; a 29-gallon or equivalent footprint class is a better target for one adult, providing more water volume for dilution and parameter stability — axolotls produce significant waste. African Dwarf Frog (Hymenochirus spp.) — Aquatic

Vivarium vs Aquarium vs Paludarium

The enclosure type matters as much as the size:

  • Vivarium — primarily land-based; appropriate for terrestrial and arboreal species; may include a small water feature but is not designed for aquatic animals
  • Aquarium — water-based; appropriate for fully aquatic species like axolotls and African Dwarf Frogs
  • Paludarium — combined land and water sections; appropriate for semi-aquatic species like fire-bellied toads; more complex to set up but allows natural behavior for species that use both environments

Humidity, Ventilation, and Enclosure Choice

Many amphibians require high humidity, which affects which enclosure types work. Screen-top enclosures lose humidity quickly; front-opening glass enclosures with reduced top ventilation retain humidity better for high-humidity species. However, humidity retention has to be balanced against adequate air exchange — stagnant, poorly ventilated enclosures create their own problems regardless of humidity level.

Humidity is best managed through substrate moisture, appropriate enclosure format, and regular misting rather than relying on a fogger to compensate for a poorly matched enclosure. Research your species' specific humidity and ventilation requirements before choosing an enclosure type.
