What Size Enclosure Does a Tarantula Need?

Tarantula enclosure sizing is more nuanced than most beginner guides suggest. The right enclosure depends on the species' lifestyle (arboreal vs terrestrial vs fossorial), the spider's current size and life stage, and the specific dimensions that matter for each type. Getting this wrong — particularly using an unnecessarily large enclosure for a sling or too much vertical space for a heavy terrestrial — can make feeding, monitoring, and husbandry harder.

The Core Rule: Match Enclosure Type to Lifestyle

Before sizing, identify whether your species is:

  • Terrestrial — ground-dwelling; needs floor space and substrate depth for burrowing or surface movement. Excessive height is unnecessary and can be a fall risk for heavier species.
  • Arboreal — tree-dwelling; needs vertical height for climbing and anchor points for webbing. Floor space is less critical.
  • Fossorial — burrowing species; needs significant substrate depth. Width and height matter less than depth.

An arboreal tarantula in a wide, shallow terrestrial enclosure and a terrestrial tarantula in a tall arboreal enclosure are both poorly housed — even if the volume is similar.


Sizing by Life Stage

Tarantulas are typically kept in progressively larger enclosures as they grow. An unnecessarily large enclosure for a sling makes it harder to locate and monitor the spider, find and remove uneaten prey, and manage moisture in some setups — without providing meaningful benefit over a well-structured, appropriately sized one.

For arboreal species, height is the primary dimension — aim for at least 3x the leg span in vertical space. These are starting points; individual species and keeper preferences vary.

Mexican Red Knee (Brachypelma hamorii) — Terrestrial

Slow-growing, docile terrestrial species. Adults reach 5–6 inch leg span. A 10–12 gallon equivalent enclosure with 4–6 inches of substrate and a hide is appropriate for adults. Why Enclosure Fit Matters

A well-structured, appropriately sized enclosure is better than a large empty one. Practical problems with poor sizing:

  • Tiny slings become difficult to locate and monitor in oversized enclosures
  • Finding and removing uneaten prey becomes harder
  • Moisture management can be more difficult in some setups
  • Excessive vertical clearance is actively dangerous for heavy terrestrial species — a fall can rupture the abdomen
  • A large empty enclosure provides little benefit over an appropriately sized, well-structured one with a hide, substrate, and correct ventilation

Ventilation Matters as Much as Size

Enclosure dimensions are only part of the equation. Ventilation placement affects humidity gradients and air quality:

  • Terrestrial species — cross-ventilation (side + top) allows a moisture gradient; damp substrate at depth, drier surface
  • Arboreal species — good cross-ventilation is particularly important for commonly kept Avicularia and Caribena species; avoid persistently wet, stagnant setups which can promote mold and unhealthy conditions
