Why African Fat-Tailed Geckos Need a Different Setup Than Leopard Geckos
African fat-tailed geckos (Hemitheconyx caudicinctus) are frequently compared with leopard geckos, but their setups aren’t identical. Fat-tails naturally inhabit humid savannas and forest-edge environments in West Africa, so they generally benefit from higher humidity and moisture-retaining substrate.
The biggest setup differences are humidity and substrate. A fat-tail enclosure should provide a humid microclimate while still maintaining a warm, dry basking area.
Why Each Component Matters
Enclosure — Vivarium 36"x18"x18"
A 36"x18" footprint provides a substantial floor area for an adult African fat-tailed gecko while leaving room for a thermal gradient, multiple hides, a water dish, and a humid hide.
A front-opening enclosure is particularly convenient because it allows access from the side rather than reaching down from directly above the animal.

Fat-tailed geckos generally require more humidity than leopard geckos. A substrate capable of holding moisture can help maintain appropriate ambient humidity and create localized humid areas without requiring constant misting.

African fat-tailed geckos benefit from a defined warm basking area for thermoregulation and digestion.
The GoldenSun halogen provides concentrated heat over the basking area. Most keepers target a basking surface temperature around 88–92°F, with a cooler retreat elsewhere in the enclosure.
Always verify the actual basking surface temperature with an infrared temperature gun rather than relying only on an ambient thermometer.
Ceramic Dome Reflector — Vivarium Electronics 5.5"
The ceramic dome houses and directs the basking lamp. A properly rated ceramic socket is important because halogen and incandescent bulbs generate substantial heat.

UVB — Arcadia LumenIZE Forest 6% (36")
Although African fat-tailed geckos are primarily crepuscular, providing low-level UVB is increasingly considered beneficial rather than treating them as a species that requires no UVB.
A 6% Forest-strength T5 provides relatively low-intensity UVB appropriate for a species that is not exposed to intense midday desert sunlight.
Position the fixture according to the manufacturer’s recommended distance and provide shaded areas so the gecko can move away from UVB exposure when desired.

Thermostat
A thermostat is essential for controlling the basking heat source and preventing dangerous temperature fluctuations.
A proportional thermostat provides more precise control, while a properly configured on/off thermostat can also be used with appropriate equipment. The important thing is that the heat source is thermostatically controlled.

Hides — Including a Humid Hide
Provide at least three functional hiding areas:
- Warm-side hide — positioned within the heated zone
- Cool-side hide — positioned away from the basking area
- Humid hide — an enclosed hide containing damp sphagnum moss or another appropriate moisture-retaining material
The humid hide gives the gecko access to a localized moist microclimate, which is particularly useful during shedding.

Water Dish
Provide a shallow water dish with clean water at all times.
