Complete Adult Bearded Dragon Setup
An adult bearded dragon enclosure requires five core components: a large enclosure, high-output UVB lighting, a basking heat source, temperature control, and substrate. This page explains what each component does and why it matters, so you know what you’re buying before you buy it.

Why Each Component Matters
Enclosure
Adult bearded dragons are active, diurnal lizards that need space for a full thermal gradient — a hot basking end and a cooler retreat. A 4′×2′ footprint is the most widely recommended adult size, as it allows a proper gradient, hides, a water dish, and room to move. Front-opening enclosures are preferred over top-opening — overhead access can trigger a stress response in some animals.
UVB Lighting
UVB is essential for bearded dragons. They are a diurnal desert species that basks in strong sunlight in the wild, and they synthesize vitamin D3 through UVB exposure. Without adequate UVB, metabolic bone disease is a long-term risk. Bearded dragons require a higher UVB output than most other commonly kept reptiles — a T5 HO fixture with desert-appropriate output (such as Arcadia 12% or 14%) is the standard recommendation among experienced keepers. A 6% forest output is generally considered insufficient for this species. The fixture should be inside-mounted to eliminate mesh blocking and should span at least two-thirds of the enclosure length.
Basking Heat
Bearded dragons need a defined, hot basking spot to thermoregulate and digest food. A halogen or incandescent basking lamp positioned over a flat surface (slate tile, flat rock, or a raised platform) is the most commonly used approach. Most keepers target basking surface temperatures in the 105–115°F range, though individual animals and setups vary — always verify with an infrared temperature gun at the basking surface, not an ambient thermometer in the air.
Thermostat
A proportional thermostat regulates the basking lamp output continuously, preventing temperature spikes and extending bulb life. Setting it to your target basking surface temperature keeps conditions stable without the on/off cycling of a basic thermostat.
Supplemental LED Lighting
The LumenIZE Jungle Dawn LED bar provides full-spectrum ambient light that complements the UVB fixture. It improves the overall light quality in the enclosure and is particularly useful in naturalistic or planted setups. Run on the same timer as the UVB.
Temperature Monitoring
An infrared temperature gun is essential for verifying basking surface temperature. Digital thermometers measure air temperature — useful for tracking ambient and cool-side temps — but surface temperature at the basking spot requires an IR gun. Basking lamps also dim over time, so surface temperatures drift down without a bulb change. Check surface temps regularly.
What the Bundle Doesn’t Include
Substrate
A topsoil/sand mix (60–70% topsoil, 30–40% sand) is the most naturalistic option for adult bearded dragons and the most widely used among experienced keepers. Tile is a practical alternative for keepers who prioritize easy cleaning. Loose substrate is generally better suited to established adults — young or newly acquired animals are often started on tile or paper towel until they’re settled and feeding reliably.

Basking Surface
A flat slate tile, large flat rock, or raised platform under the basking lamp. The surface absorbs and radiates heat, giving the animal a warm surface to sit on and helping maintain basking spot temperatures.
Hides & Water Dish
A hide on the cool side gives the animal a retreat option. A shallow water dish allows drinking and occasional soaking. Bearded dragons don’t soak frequently but should have access to clean water.
