Uromastyx Species Guide
The genus Uromastyx contains numerous recognized species distributed across North Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. A handful of these are regularly available in the captive hobby, each with distinct coloration, adult size, temperament, and care nuances. This guide covers the species most commonly kept in captivity.
Species at a Glance
| Species | Adult Size | Temperament | Keeper Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mali (U. dispar maliensis) | 10–15" | Active, handleable | Beginner–Intermediate |
| Saharan (U. geyri) | 11–15" | Generally calm | Beginner–Intermediate |
| Ornate (U. ornata) | 10–15" | Variable; can be flighty | Intermediate |
| Moroccan (U. acanthinura) | 12–16" | Generally calm | Beginner–Intermediate |
| Egyptian (U. aegyptia) | 18–30"+ | Generally calm; powerful | Intermediate–Advanced |
| Yemen (U. yemenensis) | 10–13" | Shy; different humidity needs | Intermediate–Advanced |
Mali Uromastyx (Uromastyx dispar maliensis)
Mali Uromastyx are one of the most widely available and commonly kept species in the hobby. Males develop striking yellow and black patterning; females are more cryptically colored. They are active, curious lizards that tend to become comfortable with regular keeper interaction.
- Adult size: typically 10–15"
- Coloration: males yellow/black; females tan/brown with pattern
- Temperament: active and generally handleable with regular interaction
- Care notes: standard Uromastyx care; widely available captive bred
Saharan Uromastyx (Uromastyx geyri)
Saharan Uromastyx tend toward yellow to orange coloration and are generally calm in temperament. They tolerate a relatively wide temperature range compared to some other species and are commonly kept alongside Mali as an established hobby species.
- Adult size: typically 11–15"
- Coloration: yellow to orange; some individuals develop vivid coloration
- Temperament: generally calm
- Care notes: standard Uromastyx care; tolerates a somewhat broader temperature range; reasonably available captive bred
Ornate Uromastyx (Uromastyx ornata)
Ornate Uromastyx are known for vivid coloration. Males develop blue, green, and orange patterning that makes them among the most visually striking lizards in the hobby. Temperament can be more variable than Mali or Saharan — some individuals are flighty, particularly when young.
- Adult size: typically 10–15"
- Coloration: males highly variable; blue, green, orange, yellow; coloration develops with age and maturity
- Temperament: variable; can be more flighty than Mali or Saharan, particularly as juveniles
- Care notes: standard Uromastyx care; generally more expensive than Mali or Saharan
Moroccan Uromastyx (Uromastyx acanthinura)
Moroccan Uromastyx are a robust species with highly variable coloration — individuals range from dull browns to orange, red, and yellow. They are generally calm in captivity and have been kept in the hobby for many years.
- Adult size: typically 12–16"
- Coloration: highly variable; orange, red, yellow, and brown individuals occur
- Temperament: generally calm
- Care notes: standard Uromastyx care; slightly larger adult size should be factored into enclosure planning; less common than Mali or Saharan in many markets
Egyptian Uromastyx (Uromastyx aegyptia)
Egyptian Uromastyx are the largest commonly kept species in the genus and require substantially more space than other commonly kept Uromastyx. Adults commonly reach 18–24"; large individuals can approach or exceed 30". The enclosure requirement — a minimum of 6×3×3 ft for adults — is a significant practical consideration.
- Adult size: commonly 18–24"; large individuals can approach or exceed 30"
- Coloration: grey-brown to tan; less colorful than many other species
- Temperament: generally calm; physical strength at adult size is considerable
- Care notes: enclosure must be planned for adult size from the start; available captive bred but less common and typically more expensive than smaller species
Yemen Uromastyx (Uromastyx yemenensis)
Yemen Uromastyx are less commonly kept and have notably different humidity requirements from most other Uromastyx species. They originate from a range with more seasonal humidity variation and require higher ambient humidity — around 50% — in contrast to the 20–30% typical for most commonly kept species. They tend to be shy in captivity.
- Adult size: typically 10–13"
- Coloration: dark brown to black with pattern
- Temperament: shy; generally less tolerant of handling than Mali or Saharan
- Care notes: humidity requirements differ significantly from other Uromastyx species; not a typical first Uromastyx; less commonly available
Species by Common Use
- Mali: widely available and commonly kept; established captive husbandry
- Saharan: commonly kept; generally calm temperament
- Ornate: known for vivid male coloration; more variable temperament
- Moroccan: robust species with highly variable coloration
- Egyptian: largest commonly kept species; requires substantially more space
- Yemen: less commonly kept; has distinct humidity requirements that differ from the rest of the genus
Regardless of species, all Uromastyx share the same core requirements: high basking temperatures, strong UVB, an arid environment (Yemen excepted), and a plant-based diet. Species differ in adult size, coloration, temperament, and some husbandry nuances — but the fundamental setup is consistent across most of the genus.
