African Fat-Tailed Gecko Breeding Guide
African Fat-Tailed Geckos are a rewarding species to breed. They produce small clutches of two eggs, incubate reliably at room temperature or in a dedicated incubator, and hatchlings are straightforward to raise. This guide covers the full breeding process from conditioning through hatchling care.

Before You Breed: Prerequisites
- Age and weight: Females should be at least 18–24 months old and weigh a minimum of 35–40 grams before breeding. Breeding underweight or immature females is stressful and can cause health complications.
- Health: Both animals should be in excellent health with full, well-rounded tails and no signs of illness or parasites.
- Separate housing: Males and females should be housed separately outside of intentional breeding introductions.
- Calcium reserves: Ensure the female has been on a consistent calcium supplementation schedule for several months before breeding — egg production is calcium-intensive.
Cycling (Brumation)
In the wild, AFTs experience a cooler, drier season that triggers breeding behavior. Replicating this in captivity — a process called cycling or brumation — is not strictly required for AFTs to breed, but it significantly improves breeding success and egg production consistency.
How to Cycle AFTs
- Reduce temperatures gradually over 2–4 weeks starting in October–November: lower the warm side surface to 80–84°F and the cool side to 65–70°F
- Reduce photoperiod to 8–10 hours of light per day
- Reduce feeding frequency — offer food every 7–10 days during the cool period; many geckos will refuse food entirely, which is normal
- Maintain humidity — do not reduce humidity during cycling; the humid hide should remain available
- Hold the cool period for 6–8 weeks (December–January)
- Gradually return to normal temperatures over 2–4 weeks in February; resume normal feeding once the gecko is eating consistently
Do not cycle geckos that are underweight, ill, or have thin tails. A gecko needs good fat reserves to safely tolerate a reduced feeding period.
Pairing
Once both animals have returned to normal temperatures and are feeding well, introduce the male to the female's enclosure for breeding.
- Introduce the male to the female's enclosure — never the reverse, as territorial behavior is less pronounced in the female's space
- Supervise the introduction; mating typically occurs within minutes to a few hours
- Mating behavior includes the male licking the female, biting the back of her neck, and aligning their vents
- Remove the male after mating is observed or after 24–48 hours
- Do not leave the pair together permanently — repeated mating attempts stress the female
- A single successful mating can fertilize multiple clutches; females can store sperm for several months
Egg Laying
After a successful mating, the female will develop eggs over approximately 3–4 weeks. Signs that laying is imminent:
- Visible egg bulges on either side of the abdomen
- Increased digging and restlessness
- Reduced appetite
- Spending more time on the warm side
Laying Box
Provide a laying box — a container large enough for the female to turn around in, filled with 3–4 inches of moist substrate (coconut fiber or sphagnum moss works well). The substrate should hold its shape when squeezed but not drip water.
Place the laying box on the warm side of the enclosure. Most females will lay at night. AFTs typically lay clutches of two eggs.

Egg Incubation
Remove eggs carefully from the laying box as soon as they are discovered. Do not rotate the eggs — mark the top of each egg with a soft pencil before moving to maintain orientation.
Incubation Setup
- Place eggs in a small deli cup or container with a lid, half-buried in moist vermiculite or perlite (1:1 water to substrate by weight)
- Poke a few small air holes in the lid for gas exchange
- Check moisture every 1–2 weeks; add a few drops of water if the substrate begins to dry out
AFTs are reported by many breeders to show temperature-influenced sex ratios, though the data is less definitive than in species with well-documented temperature-dependent sex determination. The incubation ranges below reflect commonly reported breeder practice — verify with current breeder communities before relying on them for sex-specific projects.

Fertile eggs are typically white, firm, and slightly chalky. Infertile or dead eggs will collapse, yellow, or develop mold within the first 2–3 weeks. Remove any clearly infertile eggs promptly to prevent mold spreading to viable eggs.
Hatching
Hatchlings will pip (cut through the egg with their egg tooth) and may remain partially inside the egg for 12–24 hours while absorbing the remaining yolk sac. Do not assist hatching — let the hatchling emerge on its own timeline.
Once fully emerged, move the hatchling to a small, simple setup: a plastic tub or small enclosure with paper towel substrate, a small warm hide, a small cool hide, a small humid hide, and a shallow water dish.
Hatchling Care
- First shed: Hatchlings will shed within the first 3–7 days. Do not offer food until after the first shed.
- First feeding: Offer small crickets or BSFL (1/4" size) after the first shed. Most hatchlings eat readily within the first week.
- Feeding frequency: Daily or every other day for the first 3 months
- Supplementation: Calcium with D3 at every feeding; multivitamin every 3–4 feedings
- Humidity: Maintain 50–70% ambient and a damp humid hide — same as adults
- Temperatures: Same gradient as adults; warm side surface 88–92°F
- Housing: House hatchlings individually from the start

How Many Clutches Per Year?
A healthy female AFT can produce 4–6 clutches per breeding season (typically February through August), with each clutch containing two eggs. Allow the female to rest between clutches — ensure she is eating well and maintaining body weight before the next pairing or before she lays again from stored sperm.
Many experienced breeders give females a breeding season off every few years to allow them to fully rebuild body condition and calcium reserves. Continuous breeding without rest can deplete calcium reserves over time.
FAQs
Do I have to cycle my AFTs to breed them?
No — some AFTs will breed without cycling, particularly if kept in a room with natural seasonal temperature variation. However, cycling significantly improves breeding success and produces more consistent results. If you're serious about breeding, cycling is worth the effort.
How do I know if my AFT eggs are fertile?
Fertile eggs are white, firm, and slightly chalky. Within 2–3 weeks you can candle them (hold a small flashlight against the egg in a dark room) — a fertile egg will show a pink or red embryo and visible blood vessels. Infertile eggs remain uniformly yellow or collapse.
My female laid eggs but there was no male. Will they hatch?
No. Infertile eggs will not hatch. Females can produce infertile clutches without any male contact. Dispose of infertile eggs and ensure the female is receiving adequate calcium supplementation to replace what was used in egg production.
How long until hatchlings can be sold or rehomed?
Most breeders keep hatchlings for a minimum of 8–12 weeks to ensure they are feeding consistently, shedding cleanly, and gaining weight before rehoming. A hatchling that is not eating reliably should not be sold.
