Mandarin dragonets are slow, methodical foragers that spend most of their day picking copepods off live rock and substrate. A mandarin in a small tank will exhaust its foraging territory quickly.
Water Parameter Stability

Can a Mandarin Dragonet Live in a 30-Gallon Tank?
Yes - a 30-gallon tank is the accepted minimum and can work, but it requires more active management than a larger system. In a 30-gallon tank:
- Copepod supplementation will need to be more frequent - weekly rather than bi-weekly
- The refugium copepod population will need to be well-established and productive before adding the mandarin
- Body condition monitoring is especially important - a mandarin in a small tank can lose condition quickly if the copepod population crashes
- Avoid any copepod-competing tankmates such as scooter blennies or other dragonets
