Firefish typically live 3-5 years in captivity under good conditions, with some individuals reaching 6+ years in well-maintained reef tanks. They are not the longest-lived marine fish, but most losses are preventable. The leading cause of premature firefish death is jumping from an uncovered tank - not disease, not water quality, not aggression. A secure lid alone dramatically extends the average firefish lifespan in captivity.

What Affects Firefish Lifespan
Jumping
Jumping is the leading cause of premature death in firefish in captivity - and it is entirely preventable. Firefish are excellent jumpers and will leap from an open or poorly covered tank, particularly during the first 2-4 weeks after introduction when they are still acclimating and easily startled. Water Quality
Stable, high-quality water is essential for long-term firefish health. Ammonia and nitrite must be maintained at 0 ppm at all times. Elevated nitrate suppresses immune function over time - keep it below 20 ppm with regular water changes. Adequate Bolt Holes
Firefish without adequate bolt holes - small caves or crevices in the rockwork they can instantly retreat into when startled - experience chronic stress. Aggression from Tankmates

Diet
