Firefish Tankmates

Firefish are peaceful toward virtually all reef fish and invertebrates, making them compatible with most community reef setups. Their main vulnerability is aggression from other fish - a firefish being chased will jump. Choosing the right tankmates is less about what the firefish will do to other fish and more about what other fish will do to the firefish.

Best Tankmates for Firefish

Clownfish

Clownfish are one of the most compatible tankmates for firefish. They occupy different areas of the tank - clownfish associate with anemones or a specific territory, while firefish hover in the mid-water column and retreat to bolt holes in the rockwork. They do not compete for territory or food and generally ignore each other. A clownfish pair and a firefish is one of the most common and reliable beginner reef combinations. Royal Gramma

Royal grammas and firefish coexist well. Royal grammas are cave dwellers that establish territory in the rockwork, while firefish hover in the water column. They occupy different niches and rarely interact aggressively. Both are peaceful, reef safe, and beginner-friendly. See our Royal Gramma Care Guide.

Mandarin Dragonet

Mandarin dragonets and firefish are compatible. Mandarins are slow, methodical foragers that stay close to the substrate and rockwork, while firefish hover in the mid-water column. They do not compete for territory or food. Note that both species benefit from a refugium copepod population - the mandarin depends on it, and the firefish benefits from the supplemental live food. Gobies

Most gobies are peaceful and compatible with firefish. Watchman gobies, clown gobies, and neon gobies all coexist well. Avoid housing firefish with dragonet-type gobies that compete for copepods in tanks with a mandarin dragonet.

Cardinalfish

Cardinalfish are peaceful, mid-water fish that coexist well with firefish. Banggai cardinalfish and pajama cardinalfish are popular choices that do not compete with or harass firefish.

Blennies

Most blennies are compatible with firefish. Lawnmower blennies, tailspot blennies, and midas blennies generally ignore firefish. Avoid aggressive blenny species.

Peaceful Wrasses

Small, peaceful wrasses such as the six-line wrasse can coexist with firefish in larger tanks, though six-line wrasses can become territorial. Flasher wrasses and fairy wrasses are generally more compatible choices.

Worst Tankmates for Firefish

Aggressive Damselfish

Aggressive damselfish - particularly three-stripe damsels, domino damsels, and similar species - are one of the worst tankmates for firefish. They are highly territorial and will relentlessly chase and harass firefish. A firefish being chased will jump. Avoid all aggressive damselfish species in a firefish tank.

Royal Dottyback

Royal dottybacks are significantly more aggressive than royal grammas and will actively harass firefish. Do not house firefish with royal dottybacks or other aggressive dottyback species. See our Royal Gramma vs Royal Dottyback guide.

Large Aggressive Wrasses

Large wrasses - including dragon wrasses, Harlequin tuskfish, and similar species - will harass or eat firefish. Even some smaller wrasses like the six-line wrasse can become problematic in smaller tanks. Avoid large or aggressive wrasse species.

Triggers

Triggerfish are aggressive predators that will harass and potentially eat firefish. Do not house firefish with any triggerfish species.

A Second Firefish

Two firefish in the same tank will often fight, particularly in smaller systems. Firefish are generally kept one per tank. A confirmed mated pair can coexist in a larger system, but sourcing a mated pair is difficult. Keep one firefish per tank in most setups.
