Freshwater Shrimp Dying: Causes & Solutions

Shrimp deaths are frustrating, especially when they seem to happen without obvious cause. Most shrimp losses trace back to a manageable set of problems — water quality, parameter instability, acclimation, predation, or chemical exposure. This guide walks through the most common causes and what to do about each.

Before assuming any specific cause, test your water. Many shrimp deaths that appear mysterious are water quality issues in disguise. Test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, GH, KH, and pH at minimum. If you have not tested recently, do it before anything else.

Common Causes of Shrimp Deaths

New Tank / Uncycled Tank

Ammonia and nitrite accumulate in tanks that have not completed the nitrogen cycle. Both are toxic to shrimp at low concentrations. If your tank is new or was recently restarted, ammonia or nitrite should be among the first causes you investigate. Test for both — they should read 0 ppm before shrimp are introduced.

Acclimation Shock

Shrimp are sensitive to sudden changes in water chemistry and temperature. Moving shrimp directly from a bag or transport container into a tank with different parameters can cause osmotic shock, which may not kill immediately but can cause deaths over the following hours or days. Acclimate carefully, minimizing sudden changes in temperature and water chemistry when transferring shrimp to a new tank.

Parameter Instability

Stable parameters matter as much as correct parameters. Sudden swings in GH, KH, pH, or temperature — even within an acceptable range — can stress or kill shrimp. Common triggers include large water changes with mismatched water, temperature fluctuations from a failing heater, or KH crashing in a soft-water Caridina tank with exhausted buffering substrate. Test parameters before and after water changes and monitor for drift over time.

Incorrect Parameters for the Species

Each shrimp species has specific water chemistry requirements. Keeping soft-water Caridina in hard, alkaline tap water, or Sulawesi shrimp in standard community tank parameters, will result in chronic stress and eventual death even if the shrimp survive initially. Verify that your parameters match your species' requirements.

Copper Exposure

Shrimp are highly sensitive to excessive dissolved copper. Copper-based medications are a particular concern, and any medication or additive should be checked for invertebrate safety before use. If you have recently added a medication, fertilizer, or new decoration and shrimp are dying, copper is worth investigating.

Predation

Fish that appear peaceful may eat shrimp, particularly shrimplets. If shrimp are disappearing rather than dying visibly, predation is a likely cause. Review your tankmates and observe the tank carefully. Even small fish will eat shrimplets.

Failed Molt

Shrimp found dead partially inside their old exoskeleton have died from a failed molt. This can be associated with unsuitable mineral balance, sudden parameter changes, or other stressors. If failed molts are occurring repeatedly, test GH and review recent parameter changes.

Old Age

Most dwarf shrimp live 1–2 years. Ghost Shrimp often live less than a year. If shrimp are dying gradually in an otherwise healthy tank with no obvious cause, natural lifespan may be a factor, particularly if the shrimp were purchased as adults. A healthy colony will replace losses through breeding faster than old age removes individuals.

Disease and Parasites

Shrimp can be affected by bacterial infections, fungal infections, and parasites such as Vorticella, Scutariella, and ellobiopsid parasites ("green fungus"). Signs include visible growths on the body, unusual behavior, or rapid unexplained deaths across multiple individuals. Diagnosis is difficult without close observation. Quarantine new shrimp before adding them to an established tank to reduce introduction risk.

Overfeeding and Poor Water Quality

Uneaten food decomposes quickly in a small shrimp tank, driving up ammonia and nitrate. Overfeeding is a common cause of gradual water quality decline. Feed sparingly and remove uneaten food within a few hours.

Deaths After a Water Change

Shrimp dying in the hours or days after a water change should make you investigate parameter or temperature shock first, particularly if the replacement water differed significantly from the tank. Also confirm that replacement tap water was properly treated for chlorine and chloramine, and that no contamination was introduced through buckets, hoses, or other equipment.

Deaths Shortly After Purchase

Losses in the first days after purchase are common and often reflect the condition of the shrimp before you bought them — stress from transport, poor holding conditions at the store, or disease exposure. Acclimate carefully, quarantine if possible, and expect some initial losses with wild-caught or feeder-grade shrimp. If losses continue well after introduction, investigate the tank conditions rather than continuing to assume transport or acclimation was responsible.

Diagnosing Ongoing Deaths

If shrimp continue dying after ruling out the obvious causes above:

  1. Test all parameters — ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, GH, KH, pH, temperature
  2. Review any recent changes — new products, medications, decorations, plants, or water source changes
