Water mineral content is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — aspects of shrimp keeping. Shrimp require specific levels of general hardness (GH) and carbonate hardness (KH) to molt successfully, breed, and stay healthy. When tap water is too soft, or when you are using RO or distilled water, a remineralizer restores the minerals shrimp need.

What Are GH and KH?

  • GH (General Hardness) measures the concentration of calcium and magnesium ions in the water. These minerals are essential for shrimp exoskeleton formation and successful molting. GH that is too low or otherwise unsuitable can contribute to molting problems.
  • KH (Carbonate Hardness / Alkalinity) measures the water's buffering capacity — its ability to resist pH swings. KH requirements differ significantly between Neocaridina, soft-water Caridina, and Sulawesi shrimp.
  • TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) measures the total concentration of dissolved substances in the water. TDS is a useful monitoring tool but does not tell you what is dissolved — GH and KH testing gives you the specific information you need.

Three Distinct Remineralizer Categories

The most important thing to understand about shrimp remineralizers is that there is no universal product. Neocaridina, soft-water Caridina, and Sulawesi shrimp require fundamentally different water chemistry — and the wrong remineralizer for your species will produce the wrong parameters regardless of how carefully you dose it.

1. Neocaridina Remineralizers (GH/KH+)

Raise both GH and KH to levels suitable for Cherry Shrimp, Blue Dream Shrimp, and other Neocaridina davidi color morphs. These products produce moderately hard, neutral-to-slightly-alkaline water.

  • Target GH: 6–10
  • Target KH: 2–8
  • Target pH: 6.8–7.8
  • Target TDS: 150–300 ppm

Salty Shrimp GH/KH+ is the most widely used product in this category. Dose into RO water or use to supplement soft tap water. Many tap water sources already fall within Neocaridina range — test before purchasing.

2. Soft-Water Caridina Remineralizers (GH+ only)

Raise GH only, leaving KH near zero. Used with RO water for bee shrimp and other soft-water Caridina that require low-KH, acidic conditions. These products are specifically formulated to add calcium and magnesium without raising carbonate hardness.

  • Target GH: 4–6
  • Target KH: 0–1
  • Target pH: 5.8–6.8 (managed by active buffering substrate)
  • Target TDS: 100–200 ppm

3. Sulawesi Remineralizers

A distinct category entirely. Sulawesi shrimp come from ancient lakes with warm, alkaline, mineral-rich water — the opposite of soft-water Caridina. Sulawesi-specific remineralizers are formulated to produce elevated GH, elevated KH, and high pH simultaneously.

  • Target GH: approximately 8–12
  • Target KH: approximately 4–8
  • Target pH: 7.8–8.5
  • Target TDS: 200–300 ppm

Use only Sulawesi-specific mineral products for this species. Standard Neocaridina or Caridina remineralizers will not produce the correct parameter profile. Always verify target parameters against your specific product's instructions, as Sulawesi husbandry is specialized enough that exact targets can vary between experienced keepers.

When Do You Need a Remineralizer?

  • You are using RO or distilled water: RO water has near-zero GH and KH. A remineralizer is required to make it suitable for shrimp.
  • Your tap water is very soft: If your tap GH falls below the target range for your shrimp species, supplementation may be needed. Test first and compare against the parameter targets above.
  • You are keeping soft-water Caridina or Sulawesi shrimp: Both require RO water plus a species-appropriate remineralizer as standard practice.
  • You are experiencing molting problems: Shrimp that die during molting or get stuck in their old shell may be suffering from unsuitable mineral levels. Test GH before assuming other causes.

How to Use a Remineralizer

  1. Test your source water (tap or RO) for GH, KH, and TDS before dosing.
  2. For RO-based setups, mix and fully dissolve the remineralizer in replacement water before adding it to the aquarium.
  3. Dose according to the product instructions, then test again to confirm target parameters are reached.
  4. Match the GH/KH of new water to the tank water before water changes to avoid parameter shock.
  5. For warm Sulawesi tanks: top off evaporation losses with plain RO or distilled water, not remineralized water, to prevent mineral concentration over time.
