Freshwater Shrimp Water Parameters & GH/KH Guide

Water chemistry is the foundation of successful shrimp keeping. Incorrect or unstable water parameters are among the most common causes of shrimp losses. This guide covers the key parameters you need to understand, what they mean for your shrimp, and how to achieve the right chemistry for each major shrimp group.

The Key Parameters

GH (General Hardness)

GH measures the concentration of calcium and magnesium ions in the water. These minerals are essential for shrimp exoskeleton formation. Shrimp absorb calcium and magnesium from the water during and after molting to harden their new shell. GH that is too low or otherwise unsuitable can contribute to molting problems and poor overall health.

KH (Carbonate Hardness / Alkalinity)

KH measures the water's buffering capacity. Higher KH generally provides greater buffering against rapid pH changes. KH requirements vary dramatically between shrimp groups: Neocaridina tolerate moderate KH, soft-water Caridina require near-zero KH, and Sulawesi shrimp require elevated KH.

pH

KH strongly influences pH stability, but it is not the only factor determining pH — substrate, source water, CO₂, and organic load all play a role. Sudden pH swings are stressful and potentially fatal to shrimp. Managing KH and other inputs consistently is the most reliable path to stable pH.

TDS (Total Dissolved Solids)

TDS measures the total concentration of everything dissolved in the water. It is a useful monitoring tool but does not tell you what is dissolved — a high TDS from the right minerals is fine; a high TDS from nitrates and waste is not. Always test GH and KH specifically rather than relying on TDS alone.

Temperature

Temperature affects metabolism, molting frequency, breeding activity, and oxygen levels. Most freshwater shrimp prefer cooler water than typical tropical fish. Sulawesi shrimp are the major exception, requiring warm conditions.

Ammonia and Nitrite

Both must be 0 ppm at all times. Never add shrimp to an uncycled tank.

Nitrate

Nitrate is less acutely toxic than ammonia or nitrite but accumulates over time. Keep nitrate below 20 ppm for Neocaridina; below 10 ppm is strongly preferred for sensitive Caridina and Sulawesi species. Regular water changes and live plants help manage nitrate.

Parameters by Shrimp Group

Neocaridina (Cherry Shrimp, Blue Dream, and color variants)

  • Temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C)
  • pH: 6.8–7.8
  • GH: 6–10
  • KH: 2–8
  • TDS: 150–300 ppm
  • Nitrate: below 20 ppm

Hardy and adaptable. Many tap water sources fall within this range without remineralization. Test your tap water before purchasing any additives.

Soft-Water Caridina (Crystal Red, Taiwan Bee, and related bee shrimp)

  • Temperature: 68–74°F (20–23°C)
  • pH: 5.8–6.8
  • GH: 4–6
  • KH: 0–1
  • TDS: 100–200 ppm
  • Nitrate: below 10 ppm

Require soft, acidic water. Standard approach: RO water + GH-only remineralizer + active buffering substrate. Most tap water is not suitable without treatment.

Sulawesi Shrimp (Cardinal Shrimp and related species)

  • Temperature: 77–86°F (25–30°C)
  • pH: 7.8–8.5
  • GH: approximately 8–12 (verify against your specific remineralizer's target)
  • KH: approximately 4–8 (verify against your specific remineralizer's target)
  • TDS: 200–300 ppm
  • Nitrate: below 10 ppm

Require warm, alkaline, mineral-rich water — the opposite of soft-water Caridina. Use RO water with a Sulawesi-specific remineralizer. Do not use standard Neocaridina or Caridina products. Sulawesi husbandry is specialized enough that exact parameter targets can vary between experienced keepers — verify against reputable species-specific sources before finalizing your setup.

Testing Your Water

Test GH, KH, pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate before setting up a shrimp tank and regularly during maintenance. A liquid test kit is more accurate than test strips for the parameters that matter most in shrimp keeping.

Adjusting Parameters

When source water is substantially outside the required range, RO water remineralized with a species-appropriate product provides a predictable way to build the desired chemistry. If your tap water already falls within the appropriate range for your shrimp species, adjusting it may be unnecessary.

Parameter Stability

Stability matters as much as hitting the right numbers. A shrimp adapted to stable parameters at the edge of its preferred range will often fare better than one subjected to frequent swings within the ideal range. Avoid large, rapid water changes. Match replacement water temperature and chemistry to the tank before adding it. Top off evaporation with plain RO or distilled water, not remineralized water, to prevent mineral concentration over time.
