Filter sizing is one of the most common points of confusion for new fishkeepers — and one of the most consequential. An undersized filter leads to poor water quality, ammonia spikes, and sick fish. The Basic Rule: Turnover Rate
Filter sizing is expressed in GPH (gallons per hour) — how much water the filter moves through its media per hour. The standard starting point is a turnover rate of 4–6x your tank volume per hour for most freshwater community tanks.
So for a 40-gallon tank: 40 × 5 = 200 GPH as a baseline.
But there are two important caveats before you use that number:
1. Rated flow and real-world flow differ
Rated flow is measured under controlled conditions and real-world flow is often lower once media is installed and the filter accumulates debris. This is why most experienced fishkeepers size up rather than buying exactly to the stated rating.
2. Bioload changes the equation
Turnover rate is a starting point, not a fixed rule. A lightly stocked tank with a few small fish needs less filtration than a heavily stocked tank with large, messy fish. Goldfish, cichlids, and large plecos produce significantly more waste than a community of small tetras. Stock level and species choice matter as much as tank volume.

What size filter for a 20-gallon tank?
At 5x turnover, target around 100 GPH as a starting point. A HOB filter rated at 100–150 GPH is the standard choice — choosing toward the higher end of that range gives you headroom for real-world flow reduction and light overstocking. For a betta or planted tank, a gentler filter in the 75–100 GPH range with adjustable flow is preferable.
What size filter for a 55-gallon tank?
At 5–6x turnover, target roughly 275–330 GPH as a starting point. Because real-world flow may be lower than the advertised rating, choosing a filter rated somewhat above that requirement provides useful headroom. For goldfish or cichlids in a 55-gallon, push toward 400+ GPH or run two filters. A canister filter becomes a practical option at this size, particularly for higher-bioload setups.
What size filter for a 75-gallon tank?
At 5–6x turnover, target 375–450 GPH. Two HOB filters splitting the load is a common and practical approach — it provides redundancy and more even flow distribution. A single canister rated for 75–100 gallons is the other common choice, particularly if media capacity and flexibility matter more than simplicity.
Filter Type Matters Too
GPH alone doesn't tell the whole story. Different filter types suit different setups, and the type affects how effectively the stated flow rate translates to actual biological filtration.
Hang-on-back (HOB) filters
The most common filter type for tanks up to 55 gallons. Easy to maintain, widely available, and effective for most community setups. Good choice for beginners.
Canister filters
Preferred for tanks 55 gallons and up, heavily stocked tanks, and planted tanks. Their larger media capacity makes them particularly useful for larger or higher-bioload aquariums. Higher upfront cost but a practical choice when media volume and flexibility matter.
Sponge filters
Excellent biological filtration, very gentle flow — ideal for betta tanks, shrimp tanks, fry tanks, and quarantine setups. Not sufficient as the sole filter for heavily stocked tanks.
Internal filters
Compact and inexpensive; suitable for small tanks and quarantine setups. Limited media volume restricts biological filtration capacity.
Undergravel filters (UGF)

Species-Specific Notes
Betta fish
