You've decided on a fish. Now you need to build the tank. This checklist covers every component of a freshwater aquarium setup — what it does, why it matters, how requirements vary by species, and what to look for when buying. 1. Tank

Tank size is the single most important decision in freshwater fishkeeping. Bigger tanks are more stable, easier to maintain, and more forgiving of mistakes. The common beginner instinct to start small usually backfires — small tanks swing in temperature and water quality faster, and most beginner fish do better in 20+ gallons than in a 5-gallon nano.

General sizing guidelines:

  • 5–10 gallons — suitable for a single Betta; not recommended for community tanks
  • 20 gallons — the practical minimum for most beginner community setups
  • 29–40 gallons — comfortable for most beginner species; more stable and easier to stock
  • 55+ gallons — opens up mid-size species like Angelfish and larger schools

Tank shape:

Standard rectangular tanks maximize surface area for gas exchange and swimming space. Tall, narrow tanks look dramatic but have less surface area and are harder to heat and filter evenly. For most species, wider is better than taller.

2. Filter

The filter is the life support system of your aquarium. It performs three functions: mechanical filtration (removing particles), biological filtration (housing beneficial bacteria that process ammonia and nitrite), and chemical filtration (removing dissolved compounds). Biological filtration is the most critical — it's what keeps fish alive.

Filter types:

  • Hang-on-back (HOB) filter — the most common beginner filter; easy to maintain, good flow, widely available. A solid choice for most tanks up to 55 gallons.
  • Canister filter — more powerful, more media capacity, quieter. Better for larger tanks, heavily stocked tanks, or tanks with demanding water quality needs. See our Best Canister Filters guide.
  • Sponge filter — gentle flow, excellent biological filtration, cheap. Ideal for breeding tanks, fry tanks, and species that prefer low flow (Bettas, small nano fish).

Flow rate:

3. Heater

Most tropical freshwater fish require water temperatures between 72–82°F. An aquarium heater maintains a stable temperature — temperature swings stress fish and suppress immune function even when the average temperature is correct.

Heater sizing:

  • A general rule: 3–5 watts per gallon
  • For tanks over 40 gallons, two smaller heaters placed at opposite ends of the tank provide more even heating and redundancy

Heater types:

  • Submersible heater — the standard; fully submerged, adjustable thermostat, widely available
  • In-line heater — connects to canister filter tubing; heats water before it enters the tank; cleaner look

4. Lighting

Lighting requirements depend on whether you're keeping live plants and which species you're keeping. Most fish are not particularly demanding about light intensity — plants are the primary driver of lighting decisions in freshwater tanks.

Fish-only tanks:

Any standard aquarium LED that provides a natural day/night cycle is sufficient. A timer set to 8–10 hours per day prevents algae overgrowth and maintains a consistent photoperiod.

Planted tanks:

Live plants require light in the PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) range. Low-light plants (Java fern, Anubias, moss) can thrive under basic LED lighting. Medium and high-light plants require a dedicated planted tank light with sufficient PAR output at depth.

Excessive light duration and intensity, combined with nutrient imbalance, are common contributors to algae problems. Start with 6–8 hours per day and adjust based on plant growth and algae levels.

5. Substrate

Substrate affects water chemistry, plant growth, fish behavior, and tank aesthetics. The right choice depends on your species and whether you're running a planted tank.

Common substrate types:

  • Gravel — the classic choice; easy to clean, widely available, neutral water chemistry impact. Good for most community fish.
  • Fine sand — strongly preferred for bottom-dwellers like Corydoras that sift through substrate. Harder to clean than gravel.
  • Planted tank substrate (aquasoil) — nutrient-rich substrate designed for live plants; lowers pH slightly; best for heavily planted setups.
  • Bare bottom — easiest to clean; used in breeding tanks, hospital tanks, and some species-specific setups.

For Corydoras, fine or smooth substrate is strongly recommended — sharp or coarse gravel can contribute to barbel damage over time.

6. Decor, Hides & Plants

Decor provides cover, reduces stress, establishes territories, and makes the tank look natural. Fish without adequate hiding spots are chronically stressed — even species that appear bold in open water benefit from having retreats available.

What to include:

  • Caves and hides — essential for bottom-dwellers, shy species, and breeding pairs. Bristlenose Plecos in particular require a cave to breed.
  • Driftwood — naturalistic, lowers pH slightly, provides surface area for biofilm that bottom-feeders graze on.
  • Live or artificial plants — provide cover, reduce aggression, and (for live plants) improve water quality by consuming nitrates.
  • Open swimming space — schooling fish like Neon Tetras and Corydoras need open midwater and bottom space; don't over-decorate.

7. Water Testing

You cannot manage water quality without testing it. The parameters that matter most in freshwater fishkeeping are ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. During the cycling process, you'll test daily. Once established, weekly testing is standard.

What to test:

  • Ammonia (NH₃) — should always be 0 ppm in an established tank; any reading above 0 is dangerous
  • Nitrite (NO₂) — should always be 0 ppm in an established tank
  • Nitrate (NO₃) — acceptable below 20–40 ppm depending on species; managed through water changes
  • pH — most freshwater community fish tolerate 6.8–7.4; some species have specific requirements

  • Test strips — faster but less accurate; acceptable for quick checks, not for cycling or diagnosing problems

8. Water Conditioner

Tap water contains chlorine and chloramines that are toxic to fish and will kill beneficial bacteria. A water conditioner neutralizes these instantly and must be added to every bucket of tap water before it enters the tank — during setup, water changes, and top-offs.

9. Cycling the Tank (Before Adding Fish)

This is the most important step that most beginners skip — and the most common cause of early fish death. The nitrogen cycle establishes colonies of beneficial bacteria in your filter that convert toxic ammonia into nitrite, then into the less harmful nitrate.

An uncycled tank has no beneficial bacteria. Adding fish to an uncycled tank exposes them to ammonia and nitrite poisoning — often called "new tank syndrome."

Fishless cycling (recommended for beginners):

  1. Set up the tank fully — filter running, heater at temperature, dechlorinated water
  2. Add a pure ammonia source (pure ammonia drops or fish food) to feed the developing bacteria
  3. Test ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate every 1–2 days
  4. The cycle is complete when ammonia and nitrite both read 0 ppm and nitrate is detectable
  5. A fishless cycle typically takes 4–6 weeks; seeding with bottled beneficial bacteria or established filter media can speed this up significantly

10. Food & Feeding Supplies

Different fish eat at different levels of the water column and require different food types. Feeding the right food in the right place is as important as feeding the right amount.

Food types by feeding zone:

  • Surface feeders — floating flakes or pellets; Bettas, Guppies, most community fish
  • Mid-water feeders — sinking pellets or slow-sinking flakes; Tetras, Angelfish
  • Bottom feeders — sinking wafers or pellets; Corydoras, Bristlenose Plecos

Feeding tips:

  • Feed small amounts 1–2 times per day — only what fish consume in 2–3 minutes
  • Uneaten food decays and spikes ammonia; remove any excess after feeding
  • Vary the diet — rotate between flakes, pellets, frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp), and blanched vegetables for bottom feeders

11. Maintenance Equipment

Regular maintenance keeps water quality stable and fish healthy. The two most important maintenance tasks are water changes and gravel vacuuming.

What you need:

  • Gravel vacuum (siphon) — removes waste from substrate during water changes; essential for gravel tanks
  • Buckets — dedicated aquarium-only buckets for water changes; never use buckets that have held soap or cleaning products
  • Algae scraper or magnetic cleaner — removes algae from glass before it builds up
  • Water conditioner — always on hand for water changes
  • Fish net — for moving fish safely when needed

Water change schedule:

Most established freshwater tanks benefit from a 25–30% water change weekly. Test nitrates before and after to confirm you're keeping levels in range. More heavily stocked tanks may need more frequent changes.

Do not add fish to an uncycled tank. The nitrogen cycle is not optional — it is the difference between fish that thrive and fish that die within days of purchase.
