Saltwater aquariums require more equipment, more patience, and more precision than freshwater tanks — but the payoff is a level of color, diversity, and complexity that freshwater simply can't match. 1. Tank
Saltwater tanks are less forgiving of small volumes than freshwater — water parameters swing faster in smaller tanks, and the consequences of a parameter crash are more severe. Most experienced reefers recommend a minimum of 30–40 gallons for a first saltwater tank, with 75+ gallons being significantly more stable and forgiving.
Tank types:
- Standard glass or acrylic aquarium — the most common choice; acrylic is lighter and clearer but scratches more easily than glass

2. Filtration & Sump
Saltwater filtration relies more heavily on biological filtration through live rock and refugiums than on mechanical filter media. The goal is to establish a stable nitrogen cycle and export nutrients efficiently.
Filtration approaches:
- Sump — a separate tank (usually below the display tank) that houses equipment, increases total water volume, and allows a refugium. The preferred approach for most reef tanks.
- Refugium — a section of the sump with live macroalgae (typically Chaeto) that exports nitrates and phosphates naturally. Highly recommended for reef tanks.
- Hang-on-back filter — acceptable for fish-only tanks; less effective for reef systems without additional nutrient export
- Canister filter — can be used but requires frequent maintenance to prevent nitrate buildup; less common in reef setups

3. Protein Skimmer
A protein skimmer removes dissolved organic compounds from the water before they break down into ammonia and nitrate. It is one of the most important pieces of equipment in a saltwater system and is strongly recommended for reef tanks and heavily stocked fish-only tanks.
Skimmers work by creating a column of fine bubbles that organic compounds adhere to; the foam rises into a collection cup and is removed from the system. A well-tuned skimmer significantly reduces the nutrient load on the rest of your filtration.
Skimmer sizing:
Skimmer ratings aren't standardized across brands — a gallon rating from one manufacturer isn't directly comparable to another. Size based on your total system volume and bioload, using the manufacturer's heavy-load rating if you stock heavily or feed aggressively.

4. Lighting
Lighting requirements in saltwater depend entirely on whether you're keeping fish only or corals.
Fish-only with live rock (FOWLR):
Any standard aquarium LED that supports a natural photoperiod is sufficient. Corals are not present, so PAR output is not a primary concern.
Reef tanks with soft corals and LPS:
Moderate PAR output (50–150 PAR at coral placement) from a quality reef LED. Many beginner-friendly corals (mushrooms, zoanthids, hammer coral) are tolerant of a wide PAR range.
Reef tanks with SPS corals:
High PAR output (150–350+ PAR depending on species) from a high-end reef LED or T5 hybrid. SPS corals are the most demanding and least forgiving of lighting inconsistency.
Photoperiod: most reef tanks run 8–10 hours of light per day. Longer photoperiods contribute to algae problems without benefiting coral growth.

5. Water Flow
Saltwater fish and corals require significantly more water movement than freshwater species. Flow prevents dead spots where detritus accumulates, delivers nutrients to corals, and maintains oxygen levels.
Flow guidelines:
- Fish-only tanks: 10–20x total tank volume per hour
- Soft coral and LPS reef: 20–40x total tank volume per hour
- SPS reef: 40–60x+ total tank volume per hour

6. RO/DI Water System
Tap water can contain chlorine, chloramines, and dissolved compounds such as phosphate, nitrate, silicate, or metals — the exact composition varies by supply. RO/DI (reverse osmosis/deionized) water gives reef keepers a controlled, consistent starting point and is the standard practice for saltwater aquariums.
You can purchase RO/DI water from a local fish store, but for ongoing maintenance a home RO/DI unit pays for itself quickly and gives you on-demand access to pure water for water changes and top-offs.
Target: 0 TDS (total dissolved solids) from your RO/DI unit. A TDS meter is an inexpensive way to verify your membranes and resin are working correctly.

7. Salt Mix
Saltwater is made by mixing RO/DI water with a quality reef salt mix to a target salinity of 1.025–1.026 specific gravity (35 ppt). Not all salt mixes are equal — reef-grade salt mixes include elevated calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels that support coral growth.
Measuring salinity:
- Refractometer — the standard tool; more accurate than swing-arm hydrometers
- Digital salinity meter — most accurate; recommended for reef tanks where precision matters
Mix salt in a separate container with a powerhead and heater before adding to the tank — never add dry salt directly to a running aquarium.
8. Live Rock & Substrate
Live rock is the biological foundation of a saltwater aquarium. It houses the beneficial bacteria that drive the nitrogen cycle, provides natural filtration, and creates the structure and hiding spots fish and invertebrates need.
Live rock options:
- Dry rock (base rock) — starts pest-free, affordable, seeds with bacteria during cycling; takes longer to establish than true live rock
- Cured live rock — already seeded with bacteria and microfauna; speeds up cycling but may introduce hitchhikers and pests
- Aquacultured reef rock — sustainably sourced and increasingly available; supports biodiversity and seeds quickly, though hitchhikers are still possible depending on the source
Substrate:
- Live sand — fine aragonite sand seeded with beneficial bacteria and microfauna; supports a natural sandbed ecosystem
- Dry aragonite sand — seeds over time; more affordable than live sand

9. Auto Top-Off System (ATO)
Saltwater evaporates but salt does not — as water evaporates, salinity rises. An auto top-off system automatically replaces evaporated water with fresh RO/DI water to maintain stable salinity. Without an ATO, salinity swings daily as evaporation occurs, stressing fish and corals.
An ATO is not strictly required to start, but it is strongly recommended for reef tanks and any tank where you can't manually top off daily. It is one of the most impactful stability improvements you can make.

10. Water Testing
Saltwater aquariums require more comprehensive testing than freshwater. The parameters that matter most depend on whether you're keeping fish only or corals.
Fish-only tanks — test regularly:
- Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate
- pH (commonly targeted at 8.1–8.3)
- Salinity
Reef tanks — additionally test:
- Alkalinity (dKH) — commonly targeted at 8–11 dKH; critical for coral growth and health
- Calcium — commonly targeted at 380–450 ppm; essential for coral skeleton formation

11. Cycling the Tank
Like freshwater, a saltwater tank must be cycled before adding fish. The nitrogen cycle in saltwater works the same way — beneficial bacteria establish in the live rock and substrate and convert ammonia to nitrite to nitrate.
Saltwater cycling (fishless):
- Fill the tank with RO/DI water mixed to target salinity
- Add live rock or dry rock seeded with bottled bacteria
- Dose with pure ammonia (ammonium chloride solution) to feed the developing bacteria
- Run all equipment — skimmer, return pump, wavemakers, heater
- Test ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate every 2–3 days
- The cycle is complete when ammonia and nitrite both read 0 and nitrate is detectable
Saltwater cycling typically takes 4–8 weeks with dry rock. Using cured live rock or bottled bacteria can shorten this significantly. Do not add fish until the cycle is complete.

12. Food & Feeding
Saltwater fish have more varied and specific dietary requirements than most freshwater species. Research your specific fish's diet before purchasing.
Common food types:
- Frozen foods — mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine-based frozen blends are the staple diet for most saltwater fish; higher nutritional value than dry foods
- Dry pellets and flakes — convenient for daily feeding; use as a supplement to frozen foods rather than the sole diet

13. Maintenance Equipment
Saltwater tanks require consistent, regular maintenance to stay stable. The main tasks are water changes, skimmer cup emptying, and parameter testing.
What you need:
- RO/DI water supply — for water changes and top-offs; always pre-mix saltwater in a separate container before adding to the tank
- Mixing container with powerhead and heater — for preparing saltwater changes; never add unmixed salt directly to the tank
- Refractometer or digital salinity meter — verify salinity of new water before adding
- Magnetic algae scraper — for cleaning coralline algae and nuisance algae from glass

Water change schedule:
Most reef tanks benefit from 10–20% water changes weekly or biweekly. Regular water changes replenish trace elements and export nitrates and phosphates.
