Hermann's Tortoise Habitat Build Guide
A Hermann's Tortoise enclosure requires five core components: an appropriately sized terrarium, a substrate mix that supports burrowing and holds light moisture, a focused basking heat source, a high-output UVB fixture, and a ceramic dome reflector. This page breaks down each component by life stage so you know exactly what you're buying and why it matters for Testudo hermanni.

Why Hermann's Tortoises Need a Specific Setup
Hermann's Tortoises (Testudo hermanni) are active, Mediterranean tortoises that forage across varied terrain in the wild. Two important husbandry considerations are providing adequate enclosure space and appropriate UVB. A 12% desert-strength T5 UVB fixture is an appropriate option for this species when installed at the manufacturer's recommended distance — not the low-output forest or 6% bulbs suited to geckos or tropical species. UVB combined with correct diet and calcium supplementation is what keeps shell development on track over decades.
Why Each Component Matters
Enclosure
Hermann's Tortoises are active foragers that need horizontal floor space above all else. The 36"x18" is an appropriate starting enclosure for a juvenile; subadults should be moved to 48"x24" as they grow. Adults require a 72"x24" minimum — larger is preferred, particularly for larger Eastern Hermann's or multiple tortoises — or a secure outdoor pen in appropriate climates. Front-opening sliding doors allow easy access without reaching down from above, which reduces stress in ground-dwelling species.
Substrate — ReptiChip Coarse Chip Mix + ReptiEarth Fiber
Hermann's Tortoises burrow and need a substrate that holds light moisture without becoming waterlogged. A mix of coarse coconut chip and fine coconut fiber provides structure for burrowing while preventing the substrate from drying out completely. Aim for at least 3–4 inches of depth for juveniles, deeper for adults. The chip layer adds texture; the fiber base holds moisture and gives the mix body.
Basking Heat — Arcadia GoldenSun Basking Spot Heater
Hermann's Tortoises require a defined hot basking spot for thermoregulation and digestion. Target a basking surface temperature of 90–95°F, with a cooler zone on the opposite side of the enclosure. The GoldenSun provides concentrated overhead heat appropriate for a basking tortoise. Always verify the actual basking surface temperature with an infrared temperature gun rather than relying on ambient readings.
Ceramic Dome Reflector — Vivarium Electronics
The ceramic dome houses and directs the basking lamp. A properly rated ceramic socket is important for halogen and high-wattage incandescent bulbs, which generate significant heat. The Vivarium Electronics dome is rated for the GoldenSun basking heater. (Subadult setup: use the same dome from the juvenile setup or source a second unit.)
UVB — Arcadia ProT5 12% UVB D3 Desert Kit
UVB is non-negotiable for Hermann's Tortoises. Without adequate UVB, they cannot synthesize vitamin D3, leading to metabolic bone disease and irreversible shell pyramiding. The Arcadia ProT5 12% Desert Kit is specifically appropriate for Mediterranean Testudo species and covers the enclosure length. Position the fixture at the manufacturer's recommended distance above the tortoise. Run on a timer — 12–14 hours in summer, 10–12 in winter. Replace bulbs on schedule; output degrades before the bulb visibly dims.
What the Setup Doesn't Include
Thermostat
A thermostat is essential for controlling the basking heat source and preventing dangerous temperature spikes. Use a proportional or on/off thermostat rated for the wattage of your basking lamp.

Water Dish
Provide a shallow water dish large enough for the tortoise to soak in. Change daily — tortoises often defecate in water. The dish should be shallow enough for the tortoise to climb in and out of without tipping.

Hide
Provide at least one hide on the cool side. Hermann's will also burrow into the substrate as a primary retreat, but an above-ground hide helps them feel secure and gives them an easy sheltering option.
Temperature & Humidity Monitoring
Use a digital thermometer/hygrometer to monitor ambient conditions and an infrared temperature gun to verify the basking surface temperature.
