The 40-gallon breeder (36" x 18") is one of the best freshwater tank footprints in the hobby. Its wide, shallow dimensions provide more usable floor space than a standard 40-gallon tall, making it better for bottom-dwelling fish, aquascaping, and community planning. At this size, you have enough room for larger schools, a bristlenose pleco, a proper livebearer community, or a planted centerpiece build — and the water volume to keep it stable.

How to Use This Guide

The three builds below are organized by water chemistry and community style. These builds are designed around compatible water conditions — check the requirements of individual species before mixing fish from different builds.

Build 1: Soft/Neutral Water Planted Community

A peaceful, planted community built around a Honey Gourami centerpiece with a large neon tetra school and a Corydoras group. The 40-gallon breeder footprint gives everyone room to breathe.

  • Honey Gourami (1–2) — peaceful centerpiece. One male and one female work well at this size; avoid two males.
  • Neon Tetras (15–20) — a large school looks spectacular in a 36" tank. Mid-water column.
  • Corydoras (6–8) — bottom-dwelling group. False julii, peppered, or similar species. Keep in groups of 6+.
  • Bristlenose Pleco (1) — algae grazer and bottom dweller. Reaches 4–5 inches. Provides algae control the Corys and tetras don't.

Water: 74–80°F, pH 6.5–7.2, soft to moderately hard.

Build 2: Hard Water Livebearer Community

A colorful, active community built around livebearers. Harder, more alkaline water than Build 1. The 40-gallon breeder footprint gives mollies the space they need to be comfortable.

  • Mollies (4–6) — keep more females than males (2:1 ratio minimum) to reduce harassment. Active and personable.
  • Guppies (6–8) — colorful mid-water fish that complement mollies well. All male avoids population explosion.
  • Corydoras (6) — choose a Corydoras species suited to your local water hardness. Bottom-dwelling group.
  • Bristlenose Pleco (1, optional) — useful for algae control in a higher-bioload livebearer tank.

Water: 72–82°F, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately to hard.

Build 3: Large Schooling Community

A species-focused build that maximizes the visual impact of schooling fish across multiple levels. No single centerpiece — the schools are the show.

  • Neon Tetras (20–25) — a large school in a 36" tank is one of the most striking freshwater setups at any price point.
  • Corydoras (8–10) — a larger Cory group than most smaller tanks allow. The wide breeder footprint gives them excellent foraging territory.
  • Bristlenose Pleco (1) — algae control and bottom-level interest without competing for mid-water space.

Water: 74–80°F, pH 6.5–7.2, soft to moderately hard.

What Doesn't Fit a 40-Gallon Breeder

  • Angelfish — the 40 breeder's 16" height is workable but not ideal for long-term angelfish keeping. The 55-gallon is a better fit.
  • Goldfish — produce too much waste and grow too large for a community 40-gallon.
  • Multiple Angelfish pairs — breeding pairs become territorial. One pair per tank at minimum, and a taller tank is preferable.
