Best 20-Gallon Freshwater Community Tank: Fish, Equipment & Setup Guide
The 20-gallon long (30" x 12") is one of the best freshwater tank sizes in the hobby. It provides enough horizontal swimming space for a genuine schooling fish community, enough water volume for stability, and enough room for a centerpiece fish alongside a bottom-dwelling group. It is the most commercially strong freshwater build size — the stocking options are natural, the equipment is affordable, and the beginner search intent is enormous.
How to Use This Guide
The three builds below are complete stocking plans rather than species to combine freely. Pay particular attention to water hardness when mixing species from different builds — soft-water and hard-water species have different requirements and do not belong in the same tank.
Build 1: Peaceful Planted Community (Soft/Neutral Water)
The most popular 20-gallon community build. A single Honey Gourami centerpiece with a neon tetra school and a Corydoras bottom group. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water. Planted tank recommended.
- Honey Gourami (1) — peaceful centerpiece fish. One fish keeps the setup simple and avoids the temperament variability that comes with pairs.
- Neon Tetras (8–10) — mid-water schooling fish. The 30" length of a 20-gallon long gives them adequate swimming room.
- Corydoras (6) — bottom-dwelling group. Keep in groups of 6 for natural social behavior.
Water: 74–80°F, pH 6.5–7.2, soft to moderately hard.

Build 2: Livebearer Community (Hard Water)
A colorful, active community built around guppies. Harder, more alkaline water than Build 1.
- Male Guppies (6–8) — all male avoids population explosion and keeps the tank manageable. Colorful and active.
- Mollies (optional, 2–3) — mollies are chunky, active, and produce more waste than guppies. Adding mollies makes this a heavier-bioload setup — a 30+ gallon is preferable if you want mollies as part of the community. See the 40-gallon build for a more comfortable molly setup.
Water: 72–82°F, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately to hard.

Build 3: Species-Focused Schooling Tank
A two-species setup focused on showcasing natural schooling behavior. Simpler to manage and visually striking.
- Neon Tetras (12–15) — a large school in a 20-gallon long is one of the most visually impactful freshwater setups at this price point.
- Corydoras (6) — bottom-dwelling group to complete the tank without competing for mid-water space.
Water: 74–80°F, pH 6.5–7.2, soft to moderately hard.

What Doesn't Fit a 20-Gallon
- Angelfish — reach 6" tall and require 30+ gallons minimum.
- Goldfish — produce too much waste and grow too large for a community 20-gallon.
- Bristlenose Pleco — workable in a 20-gallon but produces significant waste. Better suited to 30+ gallons with good filtration.

Equipment
Tank
20-gallon long (30" x 12" x 12") is strongly preferred over a 20-gallon tall (24" x 12" x 16") for community fish. The longer footprint provides more horizontal swimming space for schooling fish and bottom dwellers.

Filter
A HOB filter rated for 30–40 gallons provides adequate filtration with headroom. Sponge filters work well for gentle-flow species. Baffle the filter output for slow-moving fish like Honey Gouramis.
Heater
A 100W adjustable heater. Stable temperature matters more than exact wattage.
Lighting
A quality LED fixture sized for the 30" footprint. Low-tech plants work under basic LED lighting; demanding plants need higher output.
Substrate
Fine sand or smooth gravel for Corydoras. Planted substrate benefits live plants and overall water quality.
Plants
Live plants reduce nitrates, provide cover, and improve the overall ecosystem. Java fern, anubias, vallisneria, and java moss are reliable low-maintenance options.
Caves and Hides
Corydoras and Honey Gouramis both benefit from cover. Driftwood, caves, and dense plant areas provide shelter and reduce stress.
