Sulcata Tortoise Feeding Guide
Sulcata Tortoises are strict herbivores native to a semi-arid environment where food is fibrous, low in protein, and often scarce. Their digestive system is designed for high-fiber, low-nutrient vegetation. In captivity, the most common dietary mistakes include offering too much protein, too little fiber, or allowing less-appropriate foods to displace grasses and other fibrous vegetation.
Staple Foods
The bulk of a Sulcata Tortoise’s diet should be grasses and hay. These are nutritionally appropriate, high in fiber, and low in protein and oxalates.
- Grass hay — Timothy hay, orchard grass, and meadow hay are all appropriate staples. Offer hay freely and consistently.
- Fresh grass — outdoor grazing on pesticide-free grass is ideal where available. Sulcatas naturally graze and will consume significant quantities given the opportunity.
- Dried grass and mixed hay — useful as a consistent indoor staple when fresh grass is not available.
Supplemental Greens
Leafy greens can supplement the diet but should not replace grass and hay as the primary food source. Appropriate options include:
- Dandelion greens and flowers
- Collard greens
- Endive and escarole
- Turnip greens
- Cactus pads (Opuntia) — a particularly appropriate supplement given the species’ native environment
- Hibiscus leaves and flowers
Foods to Limit or Avoid
High-Oxalate Greens
Avoid making high-oxalate greens a dietary staple. Spinach is the most commonly cited example. Occasional inclusion is unlikely to cause problems, but regular feeding of high-oxalate plants can interfere with calcium absorption.
High-Water, Low-Fiber Vegetables
Cucumber, lettuce, and similar vegetables offer little nutritional value for Sulcatas and can displace more appropriate foods. They are not harmful in small amounts but should not form a significant part of the diet.
Fruit
Fruit is not necessary and should generally be avoided or offered only very rarely. Sulcatas are adapted to a high-fiber, low-sugar diet.
Animal Protein
Sulcatas are strict herbivores. Animal protein — including cat food, dog food, and meat-based products sometimes historically used by keepers — is inappropriate for their herbivorous digestive physiology and can contribute to excessive protein intake and associated health problems.
High-Protein Legumes
Avoid beans, peas, and other high-protein legumes as regular food items. Excess dietary protein is associated with accelerated growth rates and has been linked to shell and organ problems in Sulcatas.
Diet and Growth Rate
Diet composition, temperature, and overall husbandry all interact to affect how quickly a Sulcata grows. Excessive growth rates and inappropriate husbandry have been associated with shell pyramiding and other health problems. Prioritizing appropriate fiber intake and avoiding excess protein — particularly in juveniles — supports steadier, healthier growth.

Supplementation
Calcium is the primary supplement commonly used when the diet does not provide sufficient calcium. Providing a cuttlebone for free-choice calcium intake is a practical and commonly used approach. Whether additional dusting of food with calcium powder is necessary depends on diet composition, UVB provision, and the animal’s overall husbandry.
Avoid over-supplementing with vitamins, particularly vitamin A, which can be toxic in excess. A varied, appropriate diet is the foundation; supplementation addresses specific gaps rather than replacing dietary quality.
Feeding Frequency
Sulcata Tortoises should have access to hay and grass daily. Supplemental greens can be offered several times per week. Unlike some reptiles, Sulcatas do not need scheduled fasting days — consistent access to appropriate fibrous food is normal and appropriate for the species.
Water
Provide fresh water in a shallow dish at all times. Juveniles may also benefit from supervised shallow warm-water soaks when additional hydration is needed, particularly during periods of dry conditions or reduced drinking. Avoid relying on soaking as a substitute for appropriate enclosure humidity, hydration, diet, and overall husbandry.
