Gargoyle Gecko vs Crested Gecko — Overview

Gargoyle Geckos and Crested Geckos are both from New Caledonia, share similar care requirements, and are among the most popular gecko species in the hobby. They are often compared because keepers are trying to choose between them. This page breaks down the key differences to help you make the right call for your situation.

Which Is Easier to Keep?

Both species have very similar husbandry requirements, but Crested Geckos generally have a slight edge for first-time keepers because they tend to be more readily available and are often easier to handle as juveniles. Gargoyle Geckos are still beginner-appropriate when their temperature requirements and juvenile temperament are understood.

Care Requirements

The care requirements for both species are nearly identical. Both need a tall arboreal enclosure, a commercial powdered diet supplemented with insects, moderate humidity with a daily dry-down cycle, and ambient temperatures in the low-to-mid 70s°F. Neither requires a basking lamp. Both benefit from low-output UVB — providing appropriate UVB is increasingly considered best practice for both species, though they can be maintained without it under some supplementation protocols.

If you can successfully maintain one species, the transition to the other is relatively straightforward. The differences are in temperament, availability, and some behavioral traits — not in fundamentally different care demands.

Temperament and Handling

This is the most meaningful practical difference between the two species. Crested Geckos tend to be calmer as juveniles and are generally considered easier to handle from a young age. Gargoyle Geckos are more defensive as juveniles — they may jump, bite, or vocalize when stressed, and some individuals take longer to settle into handling.

Adult temperament is more variable in both species. Many Gargoyle Geckos become very calm and handleable with consistent, low-stress interaction. Some Crested Geckos remain jumpy throughout their lives. Individual variation matters more than species averages for adult animals.

Tail Drop

Both species can drop their tail as a stress response, and in both cases the tail does not regenerate. Gargoyle Geckos are generally considered more likely to retain their tail than Crested Geckos — Crested Geckos in captivity quite commonly lose their tails, and tailless Crested Geckos (“froggies”) are well-established in the hobby. A dropped tail is not a health emergency in either species, but it is permanent.

Appearance

Both species are visually striking, but in different ways. Crested Geckos are named for the crests running from eye to tail and have a softer, rounder appearance. Gargoyle Geckos have bony cranial bumps giving them a more angular, prehistoric look — hence the name. Color and pattern variation exists in both species; both have a fired-up and fired-down state.

Availability and Price

Crested Geckos are more widely available and generally less expensive at the entry level. The Crested Gecko hobby has a larger established breeder network and more morphs in active production. Gargoyle Geckos are less common but well-established in the hobby — reputable breeders are available, although selection can be more limited than for Crested Geckos.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose a Crested Gecko if:

  • You want the most beginner-friendly option with the largest support community
  • You prefer a calmer juvenile temperament from the start
  • Budget or availability is a primary consideration

Choose a Gargoyle Gecko if:

  • You prefer the Gargoyle’s more angular, distinctive appearance
  • You’re comfortable being patient with juvenile temperament
  • You want a slightly less common species with an equally rewarding keeping experience

Both are excellent long-term pets with similar care demands. The choice ultimately comes down to personal preference and which animal appeals to you more.
