What Is an Axolotl Morph?

A morph refers to a color variant or pattern type in axolotls, determined by genetics. Some morphs are common and widely available; others are rare and command premium prices in the hobby.

Common Axolotl Morphs

1. Wild Type

The natural coloration of axolotls in the wild. Dark brown or olive green with gold speckles and a lighter underside. Purple or grey iridescent sheen on the skin. Gills are typically dark with red tips. Hardy and widely available.

2. Leucistic

One of the most popular morphs. White or pale pink body with black eyes and bright pink or red gills. Often mistaken for albinos, but leucistic axolotls have dark eyes — the key distinguishing feature. Striking appearance and widely available.

3. Golden Albino

Yellow to golden body with pink or red gills and reflective gold eyes. A true albino — lacks melanin. One of the most visually distinctive common morphs. Very popular in the hobby.

4. White Albino

White body with pink or red gills and pink eyes. A true albino variant — distinguished from leucistic by the pink eyes rather than black. Lacks melanin but retains some other pigment characteristics depending on the individual.

5. Axanthic

Lacks yellow pigment (xanthophores), resulting in a grey or silver appearance. Axanthic is a genetic trait, not a trade name — the exact appearance varies depending on what other genes are present. Sometimes confused with trade names like "Silver Dalmatian," which is a line-bred appearance rather than a defined genetic morph.

6. Melanoid

Dark grey to black body with no iridophores (reflective cells), giving a flat, matte appearance. No gold speckles like the wild type. Gills are typically dark. A favorite among keepers who prefer a dramatic, understated look.

7. Copper

A lighter, copper-toned albino variant with orange or copper-colored gills. Less common than golden albino but increasingly available from specialty breeders.

Rare & Designer Morphs

Mosaic

One of the rarest axolotl morphs. Mosaics occur when two fertilized eggs fuse early in development, resulting in an animal with two distinct cell populations. The result is a patchwork of two different morphs on a single animal — no two mosaics look alike. Cannot be intentionally bred; they occur spontaneously.

Chimera

A chimera arises from a different developmental process than a mosaic, though both result in animals displaying two distinct color patterns. Chimeras typically show a more defined split between the two color regions. Extremely rare and highly sought after.

Piebald

Leucistic base with dark patches of pigmentation on the back and head. The patterning is irregular and unique to each individual. Becoming more available as breeders work with the trait.

How Morphs Are Inherited

Many axolotl morphs are recessive, while others involve multiple genes interacting together. Predicting offspring color requires knowing the genetics carried by both parents — not just their visible appearance.
