Pajama Cardinalfish Tankmates Guide
Pajama Cardinalfish are peaceful, mid-water reef fish that coexist well with virtually all non-aggressive community species. Their tankmate requirements are straightforward — avoid large predators and persistent bullies, and ensure they can compete at feeding time.
Good Tankmates
Clownfish
A natural community pairing. Clownfish occupy a different niche — near their host anemone or coral — and pose no threat to cardinalfish. Compatible in virtually any reef setup.
Firefish
Peaceful, upper-water-column fish that ignore cardinalfish entirely. Both are calm, non-aggressive species. A natural community pairing.
Royal Gramma
Cave-dwelling and peaceful. Stays in the rockwork and poses no threat to mid-water cardinalfish. Reliable community reef fish.
Yellow Watchman Goby
Bottom-dwelling and peaceful. Occupies a completely different niche from the mid-water cardinalfish. No territorial interaction.

Banggai Cardinalfish
Both cardinalfish species can coexist peacefully in a larger tank with adequate space and structure. They occupy the same mid-water zone, so provide sufficient room to reduce competition.

Tailspot Blenny
Rockwork-associated and peaceful. No territorial overlap with mid-water cardinalfish.
Tangs
Active open-water swimmers that occupy a different niche. No territorial interaction with cardinalfish in appropriately sized tanks.
Ornamental Invertebrates and Corals
Pajama Cardinalfish are fully reef-safe. They do not nip corals, bother cleaner shrimp, or cause problems with ornamental invertebrates.
Tankmates to Avoid
- Large predatory fish that may view cardinalfish as prey — lionfish, groupers, large hawkfish.
- Aggressive or highly territorial fish that may persistently harass the cardinalfish.
- Fast, aggressive feeders that consistently outcompete the cardinalfish at feeding time without intervention.
Feeding Competition
Pajama Cardinalfish are slow, deliberate feeders. In a community tank with faster species, target feeding near the cardinalfish's preferred area ensures they get adequate nutrition.
