Pajama Cardinalfish Tank Size Guide
Pajama Cardinalfish are small, slow-moving fish that do not require a large tank. Tank size planning is primarily driven by how many fish you intend to keep and what community you are building around them.
Minimum Tank Size
A single Pajama Cardinalfish can be kept in a 20-gallon tank. This provides adequate water volume for stability and enough space for the fish to establish a territory near rockwork. Tanks smaller than 20 gallons are less forgiving marine environments and are not recommended.
Recommended Tank Size by Configuration
- Single fish: 20 gallons minimum. Comfortable and manageable in a nano reef setup.
- Pair: 20–30 gallons. A pair works well in this range with adequate rockwork.
- Group of 3–5: 30 gallons or larger preferred. Additional space reduces hierarchy conflict as fish mature and pair off within the group.
Tank Size and Group Dynamics
In smaller tanks, intraspecific aggression within a group can be more pronounced as fish compete for territory near preferred rockwork. A larger footprint — more length and width rather than height — provides more usable territory and reduces conflict. A 40-gallon breeder format is well suited to a group of Pajama Cardinalfish in a community reef.

Tank Size and Community Planning
- 20–30 gallon: Single or pair of Pajama Cardinalfish with 1–2 other small peaceful species (clownfish, firefish, watchman goby).
- 40–55 gallon: Group of 3–5 Pajama Cardinalfish with a full small community reef. Room for a watchman goby on the sandbed, clownfish near a coral, and cardinalfish in the mid-water.
- 75+ gallon: Full community with multiple species across all niches. Pajama Cardinalfish anchor the mid-water zone alongside Banggai Cardinalfish if desired.
