How to Tell Them Apart
The easiest way to tell neon tetras and cardinal tetras apart is the red coloration:
- Neon tetra: The red stripe covers only the lower half of the body from the mid-section to the tail. The front half of the belly is silver or white.
- Cardinal tetra: The red stripe runs the full length of the body from nose to tail. Cardinals are also slightly larger and have a more intense, saturated coloration overall.
Cardinals are generally considered the more visually striking of the two, with their full-body red making them stand out more in a planted tank.
Water Requirements
This is the most important practical difference between the two species.
Neon tetras prefer pH 6.0–7.0 and hardness of 2–10 dGH. Tank-bred neon tetras — which make up the vast majority sold in stores — are reasonably adaptable and can tolerate neutral pH and moderately soft water. This makes them more accessible for keepers with average tap water.
Cardinal tetras prefer pH 4.5–6.0 and very soft water (1–5 dGH). Many cardinal tetras available in the trade have traditionally been wild-caught, though tank-bred fish are becoming more common. Regardless of origin, cardinals generally thrive best in softer, more acidic water than neon tetras. Keeping cardinals in hard, alkaline tap water causes chronic stress and significantly shortens their lifespan. Cardinals generally require RO water or a dedicated water preparation approach to thrive long-term.
Hardiness
Neon tetras are the more beginner-friendly option. Tank-bred neon tetras are more adaptable to a range of water conditions than cardinals. Cardinals are more sensitive and less forgiving of water parameter fluctuations.
That said, neon tetras are susceptible to neon tetra disease — a species-specific parasitic infection caused by Pleistophora hyphessobryconis. Cardinals can still develop common aquarium diseases such as ich and bacterial infections, but they are not susceptible to neon tetra disease.

Neon tetras are among the most affordable freshwater fish available. They are tank-bred in large quantities and sold at virtually every pet store. Cardinal tetras often cost noticeably more than neon tetras, and availability varies — cardinals are more commonly found at specialty fish stores than at general pet retailers.
