You've decided on a species. Now you need to build the setup. This checklist covers every component of a reptile enclosure — what it does, why it matters, how requirements vary by species, and what to look for when buying. 1. Enclosure
The enclosure is the foundation of the setup. Get this right first — everything else is built around it.
Glass Terrarium (Screen Top)
The most widely available and affordable option. Good visibility, easy to find in standard sizes, and compatible with most heating and lighting equipment. The main drawback: screen tops lose heat and humidity quickly, which matters more for some species than others.
Best for: Bearded dragons, corn snakes, ball pythons (with screen modification for humidity)
PVC Enclosure
Retains heat and humidity far better than glass. More expensive upfront but the better long-term choice for species with higher humidity requirements. Front-opening doors reduce stress during handling.
Best for: Ball pythons, blue tongue skinks, hognose snakes, African fat-tailed geckos, leopard geckos
Screen Cage
Maximum ventilation. Ideal for species that need high airflow and don't require humidity retention.
Best for: Chameleons
Key sizing rule:
For terrestrial species, floor space matters more than height. For arboreal species, height matters more than floor space. When in doubt, go larger — you can always add more enrichment to fill space, but you can't add floor space to a tank that's too small.

2. Heating
Reptiles are ectotherms — they rely on external heat sources to regulate body temperature. Most reptile enclosures should provide an appropriate thermal gradient: a warm side and a cool side so the animal can move between them as needed. Exact requirements vary by species.
Basking Lamp / Heat Lamp
Provides overhead radiant heat and creates a basking spot. Essential for diurnal species that thermoregulate by basking. Also a good primary heat source for many nocturnal and crepuscular species.
Best for: Bearded dragons, blue tongue skinks, chameleons, Russian tortoises, leopard geckos, African fat-tailed geckos
Deep Heat Projector (DHP)
Penetrating infrared heat that warms tissue rather than just the surface. Increasingly popular as a primary or supplemental heat source for snakes and nocturnal species.
Best for: Ball pythons, hognose snakes, corn snakes, leopard geckos
Heat Mat (Under-Tank Heater)
Provides belly heat from below. Can be used as a supplemental heat source alongside overhead heating. Must always be connected to a thermostat — an unregulated heat mat can overheat and cause burns through the substrate.
Ceramic Heat Emitter (CHE)
Produces heat without light — useful for maintaining ambient temperatures overnight or in cold rooms without disrupting the light cycle.
Radiant Heat Panel
Mounted inside the enclosure ceiling. Efficient and effective for large PVC enclosures.

3. Thermostat
A thermostat is not optional. It regulates your heat source to maintain a target temperature and prevents dangerous overheating. Every heat mat, DHP, and CHE should be connected to a thermostat.
Types:
- On/off thermostat — basic, affordable, suitable for heat mats and CHEs
- Pulse proportional thermostat — more precise, better for heat mats and DHPs
- Dimming thermostat — required for basking lamps and radiant heat panels; smoothly adjusts power output
Match the thermostat type to your heat source. Using the wrong type can damage equipment or give inaccurate temperature control.

4. UVB & Lighting
Not all reptiles need UVB, but those that do need it to synthesize vitamin D3 and absorb calcium properly. Without adequate UVB, diurnal species will develop Metabolic Bone Disease over time regardless of supplementation.

Species that require UVB:
- Bearded dragons — high output (T5 HO, higher-percentage bulb)
- Blue tongue skinks — moderate to high output
- Chameleons — high output, full-length fixture
- Russian tortoises — high output
- Crested geckos — low output optional but beneficial
Species where UVB is optional but beneficial:
- Leopard geckos, African fat-tailed geckos — crepuscular/nocturnal; D3 can be supplemented, but low-output UVB is increasingly recommended
- Ball pythons, corn snakes, hognose snakes — not required; supplement D3 through diet
UVB bulbs degrade before they burn out — follow manufacturer guidance on replacement intervals and measure UVI at the basking site where possible.

5. Substrate
Substrate affects humidity retention, burrowing behavior, hygiene, and enrichment. The right substrate depends on the species and whether you're running a simple setup or a bioactive enclosure.
Common substrate types:
- Coconut fiber — excellent moisture retention, naturalistic, good for humid species (AFTs, ball pythons, crested geckos)
- Aspen bedding — dry, burrow-friendly, good for corn snakes and hognose snakes; avoid in humid setups
- Loose particle / sand mix — naturalistic for desert species; use with caution and appropriate particle size
- Bioactive mix — living substrate with microfauna; self-cleaning over time, best for experienced keepers
- Paper towel — best for hatchlings, quarantine, and monitoring health; easy to clean
Avoid: calcium sand (impaction risk), cedar or pine shavings (toxic to reptiles), gravel for most species.

6. Temperature & Humidity Monitoring
You cannot manage what you don't measure. Stick-on dial thermometers and analog hygrometers are not accurate enough for reptile keeping. Use digital equipment.
What you need:
- Digital thermometer with probe — place the probe at the basking spot or warm side surface to verify actual temperatures
- Temperature gun (IR thermometer) — spot-check surface temperatures anywhere in the enclosure instantly; essential for verifying basking spot and substrate surface temps
- Digital hygrometer — monitors ambient humidity; place on the cool side for an accurate ambient reading
For species with strict humidity requirements (ball pythons, AFTs, crested geckos), a hygrometer is as important as a thermometer.

7. Hides & Enrichment
Hides are not optional decoration — they are a welfare requirement. A reptile without adequate hides is a stressed reptile, and chronic stress suppresses appetite and immune function.
Minimum hide setup:
- Warm side hide — allows the animal to thermoregulate while feeling secure
- Cool side hide — allows the animal to retreat without being forced onto the warm side
- Humid hide — required for species that need higher localized humidity for shedding (AFTs, leopard geckos, ball pythons)
Enrichment:
Cork bark, climbing branches, artificial plants, and background panels add visual complexity and encourage natural behavior. Arboreal species (crested geckos, chameleons) need vertical climbing structure. Terrestrial species benefit from ground-level clutter that creates sight breaks and exploration opportunities.

8. Feeding Equipment
The right feeding setup makes feeding safer, cleaner, and more effective.
What you need:
- Feeding tongs — present prey safely without risking a bite; also animate prey to trigger feeding response in reluctant eaters
- Food dish — for species fed in-enclosure; keeps food contained and easy to remove
- Water dish — shallow, stable, easy to clean; size appropriate to the species
- Calcium and vitamin supplements — use according to your species' feeding schedule and whether UVB is provided; see your species care guide for specifics
- Feeder insects — crickets, dubia roaches, BSFL, mealworms depending on species; gut-load before feeding
For snake keepers: frozen/thawed prey is safer than live and eliminates the risk of prey injuring your snake. Use feeding tongs to present prey and trigger a feeding response.

9. Cleaning & Maintenance
A clean enclosure is a healthy enclosure. Spot-clean daily, deep-clean monthly.
What you need:
- Reptile-safe disinfectant — F10SC, chlorhexidine, or diluted veterinary disinfectant; avoid household cleaners with phenols or ammonia
- Substrate scoop — for spot-cleaning waste from loose substrate
- Spare substrate — keep a bag on hand for top-ups and partial substrate changes
- Paper towels — for spot-cleaning surfaces and water dishes
- Dedicated cleaning tools — brushes and sponges used only for the enclosure; never shared with household cleaning
Deep-clean schedule: remove the animal to a secure temporary container, remove all substrate and decor, disinfect the enclosure and all items, rinse thoroughly, allow to dry completely before reassembling.

Before You Buy: A Quick Pre-Purchase Checklist
- ✅ Enclosure fully assembled and in place
- ✅ Heating running and stable at target temperatures for at least 48 hours
- ✅ Thermostat set and verified with a temperature gun
- ✅ UVB installed and positioned correctly (if required)
- ✅ Substrate in place at correct depth

The enclosure should be fully set up, heated, and stable before the animal arrives — not after. A reptile moved into a cold or incomplete setup will be stressed from day one.
