Choosing the right enclosure size is one of the first decisions new Pacman frog keepers face. Pacman frogs have different space requirements than most reptiles — they are terrestrial burrowers that need floor space and substrate depth rather than height. This guide covers the minimum and recommended tank sizes for Pacman frogs at every life stage.
How Much Space Does a Pacman Frog Need?
Pacman frogs spend most of their time partially buried in substrate, waiting to ambush prey. They are not active explorers and do not need large enclosures to thrive. What they do need is adequate floor space to move when they choose to, and enough substrate depth to burrow comfortably.
The key dimensions to consider are:
- Floor space: More important than height for a terrestrial burrowing species.
- Substrate depth: Minimum 4 inches, 6 inches preferred for adults. The enclosure must be tall enough to accommodate deep substrate without reducing usable space above it.
- Humidity retention: Larger enclosures are harder to keep humid. Glass enclosures with partial screen tops are the most practical choice.

Female Pacman frogs grow significantly larger than males and require more space. A 20-gallon wide enclosure (24x12 footprint or larger) is the standard recommendation for an adult female. Males are smaller and can be comfortably housed in a 10-gallon for life.
Why Wide Is Better Than Tall
Pacman frogs do not climb. A tall enclosure wastes vertical space that the frog will never use and makes it harder to maintain the substrate depth needed for burrowing. A wide, lower enclosure with a large footprint is always preferable to a tall enclosure of the same volume.

Can a Tank Be Too Big?
For Pacman frogs, yes — within reason. A very large enclosure makes it harder to maintain consistent humidity and can make it difficult for the frog to locate prey. A 20-gallon wide is the practical upper limit for most single adult Pacman frogs. If you want to go larger, ensure the enclosure can be kept at 60-80% humidity and that prey is offered via tongs rather than left to roam.
Substrate Depth and Enclosure Height
With 4-6 inches of substrate required, a 12-inch tall enclosure leaves 6-8 inches of usable space above the substrate — which is adequate for a Pacman frog. Enclosures shorter than 12 inches make it difficult to maintain adequate substrate depth. Most standard 10 and 20-gallon aquariums are 12 inches tall, which works well.
