Why Is My Leopard Gecko Not Eating?
A leopard gecko that stops eating is one of the most common concerns for leo keepers. The good news is that most cases have a straightforward husbandry explanation. Work through the checklist below before assuming illness.
Common Reasons Leopard Geckos Stop Eating
1. Incorrect Temperatures
This is the most common cause. Leopard geckos are ectotherms and rely on external heat to digest food. A gecko that's too cold simply won't eat. Verify your temperatures with a digital thermometer — measure surface temperatures with an infrared thermometer or temperature gun rather than relying only on ambient air temperature:
- Warm hide surface: 88–92°F
- Cool side: 72–78°F
- Ambient air: 75–80°F
If temperatures are off, correct them first and give the gecko 5–7 days to resume feeding before investigating further.
2. Shedding Cycle

3. Brumation / Seasonal Slowdown
In late fall and winter, many leopard geckos naturally reduce their activity and appetite in response to seasonal changes in light and temperature. A seasonal reduction in appetite can be normal in healthy adult geckos, provided they maintain good body condition. As long as the gecko is maintaining weight and tail fullness, a winter slowdown is not a cause for concern.
4. Stress
New geckos often refuse food for 1–2 weeks while adjusting to a new environment. Other stress triggers include frequent handling, a new enclosure, visible predators or other animals, and inadequate hides. Give newly acquired geckos at least 2 weeks of minimal disturbance before expecting regular feeding.
5. Feeder Preference
Leopard geckos can develop preferences for certain feeder insects and may initially refuse unfamiliar prey. Rotating feeder insects from a young age can help encourage a more varied diet. Try offering a different feeder insect before assuming a health problem.
6. Overfeeding

7. Illness or Parasites
If husbandry is correct and the gecko has been refusing food for more than 2–3 weeks, or if refusal is accompanied by weight loss, lethargy, abnormal droppings, or other symptoms, a veterinary examination is warranted. Parasitic infections, including cryptosporidiosis, are one possible cause of chronic weight loss and prolonged appetite loss.

- Check for signs of shed (dull skin, peeling).
- Confirm the gecko has at least two snug hides.
- Review how recently and how often you've been feeding.

How Long Can a Leopard Gecko Go Without Eating?
A healthy adult leopard gecko with good fat reserves in its tail can go several weeks without eating without immediate health risk. However, a gecko losing visible tail mass, becoming lethargic, or showing other symptoms should be seen by a vet sooner rather than later. Do not wait months before seeking help.

- Don't force-feed — this causes significant stress and can injure the gecko.
- Don't offer live prey and leave it unattended — uneaten crickets can injure a gecko overnight.
- Don't assume a short fast is always a health emergency — but don't ignore extended refusal either.
