What Is Stuck Shed in Corn Snakes?

Stuck shed — also called dysecdysis — occurs when a corn snake fails to shed its skin in one complete piece. Patches of old skin remain attached, most commonly around the eyes (eye caps), tail tip, and belly. Left untreated, retained shed can restrict circulation and cause permanent damage.

Why Do Corn Snakes Get Stuck Shed?

  • Low humidity: The most common cause. Corn snakes generally do well at 40–60% relative humidity. During a shed cycle, increasing humidity to around 60–70% or providing a properly maintained humid hide helps ensure the old skin comes off cleanly.
  • No moist hide: A humid hide gives snakes a microclimate to loosen skin during shed. Without one, dysecdysis is common.
  • Dehydration: Inadequate water access dries the skin from the inside out.
  • Injury or scarring: Old wounds can cause skin to adhere during shed.
  • Parasites or infection: Mites and skin infections disrupt normal shedding.
  • Malnutrition: Poor diet affects skin condition and shed quality.

Signs Your Corn Snake Has Stuck Shed

  • Dull, patchy, or incomplete shed after the process is complete
  • Cloudy or retained eye caps (look like a film over the eyes)
  • Tight rings of old skin around the tail tip
  • Visible patches of grey or brown skin that didn't come off

Quick Rule: A healthy shed comes off in one piece, inside-out, like a sock. Anything less than that warrants a humidity check.

How to Remove Stuck Shed Safely

  1. Warm soak: Place your corn snake in a shallow container of lukewarm water (85–90°F) for 15–20 minutes. The water should reach the snake's belly but not be deep enough to stress it.
  2. Moist towel method: After soaking, gently wrap the snake in a damp warm towel and allow it to move through the folds. The friction loosens retained patches without pulling.
  3. Gentle manual removal: For stubborn patches, use damp fingers to gently roll the skin off in the direction of scale growth (head to tail). Never pull against scale direction.

  • Don't peel off dry skin that isn't ready to come off.

  • Maintain 40–60% ambient humidity; bump to 60–70% when your snake goes into shed (eyes turn blue/cloudy).
  • Always provide a moist hide filled with damp sphagnum moss or paper towels.
