What Size Enclosure Does a Chameleon Need?

Chameleons have some of the most specific enclosure requirements of any commonly kept reptile. Unlike terrestrial species that prioritize floor space, chameleons are arboreal — they live in trees and shrubs and need significant vertical height to climb, thermoregulate, and behave naturally. Equally important is ventilation: chameleons require excellent ventilation, and poorly ventilated enclosures can allow heat and humidity to build up in unhealthy ways.

Note on species: Enclosure size requirements vary by species. This guide focuses primarily on veiled chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus), the most commonly kept species. Panther chameleons have similar requirements. Jackson's chameleons are smaller and species-dependent requirements apply.

Larger is always preferred — a bigger enclosure gives the chameleon more room to thermoregulate, reduces stress, and allows for more naturalistic planting and enrichment.

Why Screen Enclosures?

Screen or mesh enclosures are the standard recommendation for most commonly kept chameleons. They allow constant airflow, which is essential for chameleon health. Glass or PVC enclosures restrict airflow and can allow heat and humidity to build up in ways that increase the risk of respiratory infections and other health problems.

The trade-off is that screen enclosures are harder to maintain humidity in, particularly in dry climates. This is managed through misting frequency, live plants, and enclosure placement rather than by switching to a glass enclosure.

Enclosure Orientation: Vertical Height Matters

Chameleons are arboreal and spend most of their time elevated. A tall enclosure is far more valuable than a wide one for this species. The chameleon should be able to climb to a basking spot near the top of the enclosure and retreat to cooler, lower areas to thermoregulate. Ensure there are branches, vines, and plants at multiple heights throughout the enclosure.

What to Put Inside the Enclosure

  • Branches and vines — horizontal and diagonal perches at multiple heights; natural branches or commercial reptile vines both work
  • Live plants — strongly recommended; they help maintain humidity, provide cover, and create a more naturalistic environment. Safe options include pothos, ficus, hibiscus, and schefflera.
  • A basking spot — a branch positioned at a distance that allows the chameleon to reach the species-appropriate basking temperature without being able to contact the bulb or fixture. Always measure the actual temperature at the basking area with a temperature gun.
  • Foliage for cover — chameleons are stress-sensitive and need areas where they can feel hidden and secure.
  • Drainage — many keepers use a bare floor or a removable drainage tray, which makes cleaning easier and reduces the risk of accidentally ingesting loose substrate. Water drainage is a major practical consideration because misting systems can produce significant water volume.

UVB Placement

Use a linear UVB fixture positioned above the enclosure according to the bulb manufacturer's recommended distance. Can chameleons be kept in glass terrariums?

Generally not recommended for most setups. Glass terrariums restrict airflow and can lead to stagnant, humid conditions that increase the risk of respiratory infections. Screen or mesh enclosures are the standard recommendation for chameleons.

Can two chameleons share an enclosure?
