Why Lighting Matters for Chameleons

Lighting is one of the most critical — and most commonly misunderstood — aspects of chameleon husbandry. Chameleons require two distinct types of light: a heat source for thermoregulation, and UVB radiation for vitamin D3 synthesis and overall health. These are separate requirements that are typically met by separate fixtures. Getting both right is essential for long-term health.

Why Chameleons Need UVB

UVB radiation enables chameleons to synthesize vitamin D3 in their skin — the same process that occurs in wild chameleons basking in natural sunlight. Vitamin D3 is essential for calcium metabolism. Without adequate UVB, chameleons cannot properly absorb and use dietary calcium, which leads to metabolic bone disease (MBD) — one of the most common and serious health problems in captive chameleons.

While dietary D3 supplementation can partially compensate for inadequate UVB, it is not a reliable substitute for appropriate UVB lighting. UVB is strongly recommended as the primary source of D3 for captive chameleons.

Recommended UVB Bulbs

Linear T5 HO (high-output) fluorescent UVB bulbs are the standard recommendation for chameleons. They produce consistent, measurable UVB output across a wide area and are available in appropriate UVI levels for chameleons.

  • Ferguson Zone: Veiled and panther chameleons are commonly kept using UVB levels that align with Ferguson Zone 3 recommendations. The appropriate bulb strength depends on enclosure height, screen density, reflector quality, and the distance between the bulb and the basking branch. Follow the manufacturer's guidance when selecting bulb strength.
  • Screen enclosures: Screen mesh can significantly reduce UVB output. Account for this when selecting bulb strength and positioning the fixture.
  • Compact/coil UVB bulbs: Not recommended. Linear T5 HO fixtures provide more even UVB coverage and are the preferred choice.

UVB Fixture Placement

  • Position the UVB fixture above the screen top of the enclosure, running along the length of the enclosure rather than just over the basking spot.
  • The chameleon should be able to bask within the manufacturer's recommended distance range for the specific bulb and fixture combination.
  • Ensure the chameleon can also move away from the UVB source to areas of lower exposure — a UVB gradient allows the animal to self-regulate.
  • Do not place glass or plastic between the UVB bulb and the chameleon — these materials block UVB radiation. Screen mesh is acceptable, though it reduces output.
  • Replace UVB bulbs according to the manufacturer's replacement schedule, even if the bulb still produces visible light. UVB output degrades before the bulb visibly fails.

Basking / Heat Lighting

The basking lamp provides the heat source for thermoregulation and is separate from the UVB fixture. Standard incandescent or halogen bulbs are commonly used for chameleon basking spots.

  • Position the basking lamp at one end of the enclosure, above the primary basking branch.
  • Verify the temperature at the basking spot with a temperature gun — do not rely on bulb wattage or distance alone.
  • Ensure the chameleon cannot contact the bulb or fixture — thermal burns are a real risk if branches are positioned too close.
  • Turn off the basking lamp at night to allow a natural temperature drop.

Photoperiod

Provide approximately 10–14 hours of light depending on the season, with a consistent dark period every night. Seasonal variation in photoperiod supports natural hormonal cycles and is particularly important for breeding animals. A programmable timer makes maintaining a consistent photoperiod straightforward.

Common Lighting Mistakes

  • Using compact/coil UVB bulbs — inconsistent output; use linear T5 HO bulbs instead
  • Not replacing UVB bulbs on schedule — UVB output degrades invisibly; follow the manufacturer's replacement schedule regardless of visible output
  • Placing glass or plastic between the UVB bulb and the chameleon — blocks UVB radiation entirely
  • Positioning the basking branch too close to the heat source — thermal burns risk; always verify temperature at the basking spot
  • Leaving lights on 24 hours — chameleons need a consistent dark period for rest and hormonal regulation

Can I use a mercury vapor bulb (MVB) for chameleons?

Mercury vapor bulbs combine heat and UVB in a single bulb and are used by some experienced keepers. They require careful positioning to avoid overheating or over-exposing the chameleon to UVB. For most keepers, separate basking and UVB fixtures are easier to manage and adjust independently.

How do I know if my chameleon is getting enough UVB?

The most reliable way to ensure adequate UVB is to use an appropriate fixture, follow the manufacturer's distance recommendations, replace bulbs on schedule, and monitor the chameleon's overall health. Long-term health markers — normal growth, healthy bone structure, and absence of MBD symptoms — are the most practical indicators.

Do I need a UVB light if I take my chameleon outside?

Unfiltered natural sunlight is an excellent source of UVB and is beneficial for chameleons when temperatures are appropriate. However, outdoor time is weather-dependent and cannot replace a reliable indoor UVB setup. Always supervise outdoor time, ensure the chameleon has access to shade, and never place the chameleon in a glass enclosure outdoors — temperatures can rise dangerously fast.

My UVB bulb still looks bright — does it need replacing?

Possibly. UVB output degrades significantly before the bulb visibly dims or fails. Follow the manufacturer's recommended replacement schedule rather than relying on visible output as an indicator.
