Chameleon Diet Overview
Chameleons are insectivores — the vast majority of their diet in captivity should consist of live insects. Unlike blue tongue skinks or bearded dragons, chameleons do not eat plant matter as a significant part of their diet (with the notable exception of veiled chameleons, which will occasionally consume plant material). The quality of the insects you feed is as important as the insects themselves — gut-loading and supplementation are essential components of a complete chameleon diet.
Note on species: This guide focuses primarily on veiled chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus), the most commonly kept species. Staple Feeder Insects

Gut-Loading
Gut-loading — feeding nutritious food to feeder insects before offering them to your chameleon — is one of the most important aspects of chameleon nutrition. An empty or poorly fed feeder insect provides minimal nutritional value regardless of how it is supplemented. Feed insects their gut-load for at least 24–48 hours before offering them to your chameleon.
Good gut-load foods include collard greens, dandelion greens, mustard greens, butternut squash, sweet potato, carrots, and commercial gut-load products. Avoid gut-loading with iceberg lettuce, spinach, or high-oxalate foods.
Supplementation
Supplementation is critical for chameleons and one of the most common areas where keepers make mistakes. Appropriate UVB lighting is strongly recommended rather than attempting to compensate for inadequate UVB through additional dietary D3.
- Calcium without D3: commonly used on most feedings, depending on the specific supplement and husbandry setup.

Dehydration is one of the most common health problems in captive chameleons.
