Yellow Watchman Goby Tank Size Guide
Yellow Watchman Gobies are small fish that can be kept in relatively modest tank sizes, but the footprint of the tank and the presence of a sand substrate matter more than raw volume. A longer tank with adequate sandbed area is more suitable than a tall, narrow tank of equivalent gallons.
Minimum Tank Size
A 20-gallon tank is a workable minimum for a single Yellow Watchman Goby. This provides enough water volume for stability and enough sandbed footprint for the goby to establish a burrow. Tanks smaller than 20 gallons are less forgiving marine environments and are not recommended for this species.
Recommended Tank Size
A 30-gallon or larger tank is preferred, particularly for community setups. The additional footprint provides more sandbed territory, more room for rockwork anchor points near the sand, and more stable water chemistry. A 30-gallon long or 40-gallon breeder format — with more horizontal footprint than a standard tall tank — is better suited to a bottom-dwelling species than a tall tank of equivalent volume.
Tank Size and Pistol Shrimp Pairing
If keeping a pistol shrimp pair, the tank size requirements are the same, but substrate depth and rockwork placement become more important. The pistol shrimp needs adequate sand depth (minimum 2 inches) and a suitable rock or rubble anchor point to excavate a stable burrow. A 20-gallon long or larger with a proper sandbed accommodates a goby-shrimp pair comfortably.

Tank Size and Conspecific Aggression
Yellow Watchman Gobies are territorial toward other watchman gobies and similar prawn gobies. In most setups, keep only one per tank. If attempting to keep a mated pair, a larger tank with clearly separated territory and multiple burrow sites reduces conflict. Two males in a small tank will fight.
Community Planning by Tank Size
- 20-gallon: One watchman goby, possibly with a pistol shrimp. Limited room for additional fish — a small peaceful species like a clownfish or firefish is workable.
- 30–40 gallon: Comfortable community setup. Watchman goby + pistol shrimp + 2–3 small community reef fish (clownfish, firefish, royal gramma, cardinalfish).
- 55+ gallon: Full community reef with multiple species across different niches. The watchman goby anchors the sandbed zone while mid-water and rockwork species fill other areas.
