Yellow Tang Ich and Disease Guide

Tangs as a group are among the most ich-susceptible fish in the hobby, and the Yellow Tang is no exception. Understanding the diseases most likely to affect Yellow Tangs — and how to respond — is an important part of keeping this species successfully.

Marine Ich (Cryptocaryon irritans)

Marine ich is the most common disease concern for Yellow Tangs in captivity. It is caused by the parasite Cryptocaryon irritans, which completes part of its life cycle on the fish and part in the substrate and water column.

Symptoms

  • Small white spots on the body and fins, resembling grains of salt
  • Scratching or flashing against rocks and substrate
  • Rapid or labored breathing
  • Lethargy and reduced appetite in more advanced cases

How It Spreads

Ich requires the parasite to be present in the system. It is most commonly introduced via new fish, live rock, or other tank additions that have not been properly quarantined. Stress and poor water quality do not cause ich, but they can compromise a fish's immune response and make an existing infection more severe or harder to clear.

Treatment

Treating ich in a reef display is complicated because standard treatments such as copper cannot be used safely with corals and many invertebrates. Treatment is generally performed in a separate quarantine or hospital tank.

  • Copper treatment: Effective against ich. Different copper products have different therapeutic ranges — follow the specific product's protocol and use a copper test kit to monitor levels throughout treatment.
  • Hyposalinity: Reducing salinity disrupts the parasite's life cycle. Requires a separate tank and careful monitoring. Not safe for reef tanks or invertebrates.
  • Tank fallow period: Removing all fish from the display tank deprives Cryptocaryon of fish hosts while infected fish are treated separately. The required fallow period depends on the protocol and temperature being used; follow a current, evidence-based marine ich treatment protocol rather than shortening the period based only on visible disappearance of spots.

"Reef-safe" ich treatments sold for use in display tanks have limited evidence of effectiveness against Cryptocaryon irritans and should not be relied upon as a primary treatment.

Prevention

  • Quarantine all new fish before adding them to the display tank — this is the single most effective prevention measure
  • Maintain stable water parameters and minimize unnecessary stress
  • Avoid overcrowding and ensure the tang is eating well and not being harassed

Marine Velvet (Amyloodinium ocellatum)

Marine velvet is a more aggressive and faster-moving disease than ich. It is caused by a dinoflagellate parasite and can kill fish rapidly if not caught early.

Symptoms

  • Fine, dusty or velvety coating on the body and fins — finer and more uniform than ich spots
  • Rapid breathing and gasping at the surface
  • Scratching against surfaces
  • Lethargy and loss of appetite
  • Clamped fins

If velvet is suspected, rapid isolation and treatment is important because the disease can progress quickly.

Treatment

Copper treatment in a quarantine tank is the standard approach. Velvet is generally considered more difficult to treat than ich and more likely to be fatal if treatment is delayed.

Head and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE)

HLLE is a chronic condition seen in tangs characterized by pitting, discoloration, and erosion of the tissue around the head and along the lateral line. HLLE is associated with several husbandry and environmental factors, and its exact cause is not fully understood.

Symptoms

  • Pitting or cratering of the skin around the head and face
  • Discoloration or fading along the lateral line
  • Progressive worsening over time if conditions are not addressed

Management

HLLE can sometimes be reversed or halted by improving diet (particularly increasing algae and vitamin-rich foods), improving water quality, and reviewing activated carbon use, particularly if carbon dust may be entering the system. It is a chronic condition rather than an acute disease and responds slowly to changes.

Quarantine Tank: Why It Matters

A quarantine tank is the most important tool for disease prevention and treatment in a reef system. It allows you to:

  • Observe new fish for signs of disease before they enter the display tank
  • Treat sick fish with medications that cannot be used in a reef tank
  • Run a tank fallow period if ich or velvet establishes in the display tank

A basic quarantine setup does not need to be elaborate — a bare-bottom tank with a sponge filter, heater, and a few PVC pipes for hiding is sufficient.
