Mandarin Dragonet Tankmates

Mandarin dragonets are peaceful toward virtually all reef fish and invertebrates. They do not nip coral, do not harass other fish, and are reef safe. The challenge with mandarin tankmates is not what the mandarin will do to other fish - it is what other fish will do to the mandarin's food supply. Any fish that competes for copepods reduces the food available to the mandarin and can contribute to starvation over time.

Best Tankmates for Mandarin Dragonets

Clownfish

Clownfish are one of the best tankmates for mandarin dragonets. They do not compete for copepods, occupy a different area of the tank, and are peaceful toward slow-moving fish. A clownfish pair and a mandarin dragonet is a classic reef combination. See our Clownfish Care Guide.

Firefish

Firefish and mandarin dragonets are compatible. Firefish hover in the mid-water column and feed on zooplankton drifting in the current - they do not compete with mandarins for benthic copepods. Both are peaceful and reef safe. A refugium benefits both species. See our Firefish Care Guide.

Royal Gramma

Royal grammas are cave dwellers that feed on zooplankton and small crustaceans in the water column. They do not compete with mandarins for benthic copepods and are peaceful toward slow-moving fish. See our Royal Gramma Care Guide.

Cardinalfish

Cardinalfish are peaceful, mid-water fish that do not compete with mandarins for copepods. Banggai cardinalfish and pajama cardinalfish are popular choices that coexist well with mandarin dragonets.

Peaceful Blennies

Algae-grazing blennies such as lawnmower blennies and tailspot blennies do not compete with mandarins for copepods and are generally peaceful tankmates.

Coral and Invertebrates

Mandarin dragonets are fully reef safe. They do not nip coral, do not harass shrimp or other invertebrates, and are compatible with all common reef invertebrates including cleaner shrimp, snails, and hermit crabs.

Worst Tankmates for Mandarin Dragonets

Other Dragonets and Scooter Blennies

This is the most important incompatibility. Scooter blennies (Synchiropus ocellatus) and other dragonet species feed on the same benthic copepods as mandarin dragonets. Two copepod-dependent fish in the same tank will deplete the copepod population faster than the refugium can replenish it, and both fish will suffer. Do not house mandarin dragonets with scooter blennies or other dragonet species unless the tank is very large with an exceptionally productive refugium.

A Second Mandarin Dragonet

Two mandarin dragonets in the same tank will compete aggressively for territory and food unless they are a confirmed mated pair. Males will fight. A mated pair can coexist, but sourcing a confirmed mated pair is difficult. Keep one mandarin per tank in most setups.

Aggressive Fish That Harass Slow Movers

Mandarin dragonets are slow and methodical. Aggressive fish that chase or nip at slow-moving fish - including aggressive damselfish, large wrasses, and triggers - will stress the mandarin and prevent it from foraging. A stressed mandarin that cannot forage freely will starve. Avoid all aggressive species.

Fast Copepod Competitors

Some gobies and small wrasses are active copepod hunters that can significantly reduce the copepod population in the display tank. In tanks with a mandarin dragonet, monitor the copepod population carefully if housing other copepod-feeding species.
