Firefish do not require a refugium the way mandarin dragonets do - they accept frozen and prepared foods readily and are not dependent on a live copepod population to survive. That said, a refugium benefits any reef tank, including one housing firefish. It improves water quality, provides a natural copepod supplement, and supports a more stable and productive reef ecosystem overall.
Do Firefish Need a Refugium?
No - a refugium is not required for firefish. Unlike mandarin dragonets, which depend on live copepods as their primary food source, firefish are easy feeders that accept frozen mysis, marine pellets, and other prepared foods. How a Refugium Benefits a Firefish Tank
Supplemental Live Food
Firefish are planktivores that naturally feed on small zooplankton drifting in the current. A refugium seeded with copepods and amphipods continuously seeds the display tank with live food. Firefish often dart into the water column to capture copepods drifting out of the refugium return - a natural and enriching feeding behavior that supplements their prepared food diet. Improved Water Quality
A refugium with macroalgae such as chaeto (Chaetomorpha) exports nutrients by absorbing nitrate and phosphate as it grows. Regular harvesting removes those nutrients from the system, helping maintain the stable water quality that firefish and reef invertebrates prefer. While a refugium is beneficial, it should not be viewed as a substitute for regular feeding management or routine maintenance. Biological Filtration
A refugium with live rock rubble or biological media provides additional surface area for beneficial bacteria, supplementing the biological filtration in the display tank. This helps maintain stable ammonia and nitrite levels, which is especially valuable in smaller tanks where water volume is limited.

A refugium adds water volume to the system, which buffers temperature and parameter fluctuations. In a small nano reef, even a modest refugium adds meaningful stability.
Refugium Setup for a Firefish Tank
A refugium for a firefish tank does not need to be elaborate. A simple setup works well:
- Size: A refugium of roughly 10-20% of the display volume can provide meaningful benefits, although even smaller refugiums can be worthwhile if space is limited. HOB refugiums, sump chambers, and dedicated tanks all work.
- Lighting: A dedicated refugium light on a reverse photoperiod (on when display lights are off) to grow macroalgae and stabilize pH
- Macroalgae: Chaeto is the most popular choice - fast-growing, easy to harvest, and effective at nutrient export
- Live rock rubble: Provides copepod habitat and biological filtration surface area
