Molly Fish Shimmying: Causes & How to Fix It
Shimmying is one of the most recognizable and Molly-specific behaviors in freshwater fishkeeping. A shimmying molly rocks or sways side to side without moving forward — as if swimming in place. It looks unusual and can alarm keepers who haven't seen it before.
Shimmying is not a disease. It's a stress response — a sign that something in the fish's environment is wrong. The fish itself is not contagious, and there's no "shimmy treatment." The fix is identifying and correcting the underlying cause.

What Shimmying Looks Like
A shimmying molly will:
- Rock or sway from side to side in a repetitive motion
- Remain relatively stationary rather than swimming normally
- Sometimes hover near the surface, bottom, or a corner of the tank
- May also show reduced appetite, clamped fins, or lethargy alongside the shimmying
Shimmying can affect one fish or multiple fish at once. If multiple fish are shimmying, a tank-wide water quality or parameter issue is almost certainly the cause.
Common Causes
Incorrect Water Hardness or pH
One of the most common causes of shimmying in mollies. Mollies kept in soft, acidic water are chronically stressed — shimmying is one of the clearest signs that parameters are wrong. Mollies need moderately hard to hard water with a pH of 7.5–8.5. Test GH and KH as well as pH before adjusting your water. Crushed coral can gradually increase mineral content and buffering capacity when appropriate, but avoid chasing a specific pH with rapid chemical adjustments.
Poor Water Quality
Detectable ammonia or nitrite, high nitrates, or a tank that hasn't fully cycled will trigger shimmying. Test the water before assuming a parameter issue — both problems can be present simultaneously. Address water quality first: perform a water change, identify the source of the problem, and retest.
Temperature Too Low
Mollies kept below their preferred temperature range (72–82°F, ideally 76–80°F) can shimmy. Verify temperature with a reliable thermometer rather than relying on the heater's dial. A heater that's failing or undersized for the tank may not be maintaining the set temperature.
Sudden Parameter Changes
Rapid shifts in temperature, pH, or hardness — from a large water change with different parameters, a heater malfunction, or adding untreated tap water — can trigger shimmying even if the final parameters are acceptable. Stability matters as much as the numbers themselves.
New Tank or Recent Introduction
Mollies introduced to a new tank may shimmy briefly as they adjust, particularly if the water parameters differ from where they came from. Monitor closely — if shimmying resolves within a day or two and the fish begins eating and swimming normally, acclimation stress was likely the cause. If it persists, investigate parameters.
Disease
Less commonly, shimmying can accompany illness — particularly if the fish also shows other symptoms like clamped fins, spots, rapid breathing, or visible lesions. How to Fix Shimmying
- Test the water — ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, GH, KH, and temperature
- Correct water quality issues — perform a water change if ammonia or nitrite is detectable or nitrates are high
- Check and adjust hardness and pH gradually — if water is soft or acidic, crushed coral in the filter or substrate can help raise and buffer both; avoid rapid adjustments
- Verify temperature — use a separate thermometer; replace or upgrade the heater if it's not maintaining a stable temperature
- Make parameter changes gradually — sudden corrections can cause additional stress; aim for slow, stable improvement
- Monitor for other symptoms — if shimmying persists after parameters are corrected, look for signs of illness
Improvement may follow once the underlying problem is corrected, but continue monitoring the fish and water parameters rather than assuming persistent shimmying is normal.
