What Size Tank Does a Fire-Bellied Toad Need?

Fire-bellied toads are semi-aquatic and require an enclosure that provides both a land area and a water area. The enclosure size and layout matter more than gallons alone — a 20-gallon long provides far more usable floor space than a 20-gallon tall, making it a better choice for a species that spends time both on land and in shallow water.

Minimum Enclosure Size

  • A pair of toads: A 10-gallon aquarium can house a pair of fire-bellied toads, but a 20-gallon long is strongly recommended because it provides a much better balance of land and water area.
  • 2–3 toads: 20-gallon long (30" x 12" x 12") — the recommended minimum for a small group.
  • 4–6 toads: 40-gallon breeder or larger. More toads means more waste, which means more water quality management.

Larger is always better with fire-bellied toads. A bigger water section is easier to keep stable, supports better filtration, and dilutes waste more effectively.

Why a Paludarium Layout?

Fire-bellied toads are not fully aquatic — they need dry land to rest, thermoregulate, and feed on land-based prey. A paludarium (part land, part water) replicates their natural semi-aquatic habitat and supports both behavioral needs. A roughly 50/50 land-to-water split is the standard starting point, though toads will use more water-heavy setups as long as they can easily exit the water.

Building the Paludarium

Option 1: Divider Method

Use a piece of egg crate, acrylic, or cork bark to divide the enclosure into a land section and a water section. Fill the land side with substrate (coconut fiber, organic topsoil, or a mix) and the water side with 2–4 inches of dechlorinated water. This is the simplest approach and works well in standard glass tanks.

Option 2: Sloped Substrate

Build the substrate up on one side so it slopes down into the water section. The slope creates a natural shoreline and allows toads to move between land and water easily. Use larger rocks or cork bark at the waterline to prevent substrate from washing into the water.

Option 3: False Bottom / Raised Platform

Build a raised land platform over a water reservoir using egg crate and mesh. The water sits below the platform and can be accessed via ramps or gaps. More complex to build but creates a clean separation between land and water and makes water changes easier.

Water Section Requirements

  • Depth: 2–4 inches — shallow enough for toads to stand with heads above water
  • Water type: Dechlorinated only
  • Filtration: A small aquarium filter (sponge filter or small hang-on-back) significantly reduces maintenance and improves water quality stability. Choose a filter with gentle flow — fire-bellied toads prefer calm water and don't need strong current.
  • Water changes: Perform 20–30% partial water changes weekly, increasing frequency if the enclosure is heavily stocked or unfiltered.
  • Access: Provide ramps, sloped cork bark, or rocks so toads can exit the water easily from any point

Land Section Requirements

  • Substrate: Coconut fiber, organic topsoil (free of fertilizers and additives), or a mix. 2–3 inches deep.
  • Hides: Cork bark flats, half logs, or live plants provide cover and reduce stress
  • Moisture: Keep the land section moist but not waterlogged — mist lightly as needed
  • Plants: Live plants such as pothos, small ferns, and mosses on the land section help provide cover and maintain humidity. Aquatic plants such as java moss and anubias work well in the water section. Avoid plants treated with pesticides.

Filtration

A sponge filter or small hang-on-back filter in the water section is strongly recommended. Fire-bellied toads produce significant waste relative to their size, and unfiltered water degrades quickly — especially in smaller enclosures. Temperature & Humidity
