Clownfish Hosting Behavior

One of the most common questions from new clownfish keepers is: why won’t my clownfish host the anemone? Or, more broadly: why is my clownfish hosting a powerhead, a coral, or a corner of the tank instead of what I expected? Clownfish hosting behavior is instinctive but highly variable in captivity, and understanding what drives it helps set realistic expectations.

What Is Hosting Behavior?

In the wild, clownfish live in a mutualistic relationship with sea anemones. The clownfish shelters among the anemone’s stinging tentacles, which it is immune to, and defends the anemone from predators. In captivity, clownfish retain this instinct to find and associate with a host — but the host does not have to be an anemone. Clownfish will adopt almost any object or organism that provides a sense of shelter and territory.

Why Captive-Bred Clownfish Often Don’t Host Anemones

Captive-bred clownfish are raised in bare tanks without anemones. They often show weaker or more variable hosting behavior than wild-caught fish, and many will ignore an anemone entirely, even when one is present and healthy in the tank. This is normal and does not indicate a problem with the fish or the anemone. The clownfish will find its own host — it just may not be the one you intended.

What Clownfish Host Instead of Anemones

In tanks without anemones, or when clownfish ignore available anemones, they commonly adopt substitute hosts:

  • Torch coral, hammer coral, and frogspawn coral — the most commonly accepted coral hosts; the long flowing tentacles appear to trigger the hosting instinct
  • Toadstool leather coral — frequently adopted as a host, particularly by ocellaris
  • Duncan coral and other LPS corals — occasionally accepted
  • Powerhead intakes — very common; clownfish are attracted to the flow; ensure intakes are covered with a sponge guard
  • Filter returns and overflow boxes — similarly flow-related
  • A favorite corner or cave in the rockwork — particularly common in tanks with no obvious alternative
  • The surface of the substrate — some clownfish will host directly on the sand bed

Does Hosting in Coral Cause Damage?

It can. Clownfish that actively host in coral — particularly torch, hammer, or frogspawn — may cause damage through constant movement among the tentacles. The coral may retract its polyps, show signs of stress, or decline over time. Some corals tolerate clownfish hosting well; others do not. Monitor coral health closely if clownfish are actively hosting in it. If the coral is declining, physically blocking access or rearranging the tank to redirect the clownfish may be necessary.

How to Encourage Clownfish to Host an Anemone

There is no guaranteed method to make a clownfish host a specific anemone, but the following approaches improve the likelihood:

  • Choose the right species pairing: Maroon and tomato clownfish have a stronger natural association with bubble tip anemones and are more likely to host than ocellaris or percula. Clarkii clownfish accept the widest range of anemone species.
  • Remove competing hosts: If the clownfish has already adopted a powerhead or coral as a host, it is less likely to switch to an anemone. Temporarily removing the substitute host may redirect the clownfish.
  • Place the anemone near the clownfish’s territory: Anemones will move to find their preferred light and flow conditions. Once settled, placing the clownfish’s existing territory near the anemone increases the chance of contact.
  • Be patient: Some clownfish take weeks or months to begin hosting an anemone. Others never do. Forcing interaction is not possible and attempting to physically place a clownfish on an anemone causes stress to both animals.

The Bouncing or Shimmying Display

Clownfish often perform a distinctive shimmying or bouncing display near their host — or near an object they are considering as a host. This behavior involves the fish tilting and rocking from side to side in a repetitive motion. It is a normal part of the hosting relationship and is also displayed during courtship and spawning. If your clownfish is shimmying near a coral, powerhead, or anemone, it is in the process of establishing or reinforcing its relationship with that host.

When Hosting Behavior Becomes a Problem

  • Hosting in a powerhead without a sponge guard: The clownfish can be injured or killed by an unprotected intake. Cover all powerhead intakes with a sponge pre-filter.
  • Hosting in coral that is declining: Monitor coral health and intervene if the coral is showing stress.
  • Hosting in an overflow or sump return: Clownfish can enter sumps through overflow boxes. Ensure all openings are screened.
  • Aggressive defense of the host: Clownfish, particularly maroon clownfish, may become highly aggressive toward tankmates and even the keeper’s hand when defending their host territory. This is normal behavior but should be considered when planning tankmates.
