Male and female guppies are easy to tell apart once you know what to look for — and understanding the differences matters more than just identification. Whether you keep males only, females only, or a mixed group changes how you set up your tank, how you manage population, and what behavior you’ll see day to day. How to Tell Males and Females Apart

Anal Fin Shape (Most Reliable Method)

The most reliable way to sex a guppy is the anal fin — the small fin on the underside of the fish near the tail. In males, this fin is modified into a pointed, rod-like structure called the gonopodium, which is used to deliver sperm during mating. In females, the anal fin is rounded and fan-shaped. This difference is visible even in juvenile fish before adult coloration develops.

Color and Fin Size

Male guppies are significantly more colorful than females. They have been selectively bred for vivid colors, patterns, and large flowing tails and dorsal fins. Females are typically grey or silver with minimal patterning and smaller, plainer fins. In a mixed tank, males are immediately obvious as the more visually striking fish.

Body Shape and Size

Females are larger than males and have a rounder, deeper body. A gravid (pregnant) female has a noticeably swollen abdomen and a dark gravid spot near the anal fin — this spot is the developing fry visible through the body wall. Males are slimmer and more streamlined.

All-Male Tank

An all-male tank is the most popular option for beginners who want color without managing breeding. Males are more colorful, more active, and the population stays stable. The main consideration is competition and displaying between males — males will posture, chase, and establish a pecking order, but this is usually harmless in a tank with adequate space and hiding spots. Because there are no females present, males often spend more time displaying to one another than actively pursuing mates. A group of 6+ males in a 20-gallon tank with plants or decor works well.

All-Female Tank

An all-female tank is less common but practical for keepers who want guppies without the color or the breeding. Females are calmer and less visually striking. One important note: females purchased from a pet store may already be pregnant from prior contact with males and can give birth for several months after being separated. If you want a truly fry-free tank, source females that have never been housed with males.

Mixed Tank

A mixed tank allows natural behavior and breeding but requires population management. The recommended ratio is 1 male to 2–3 females. This distributes male attention across multiple females, reducing stress on any individual female. A ratio with too many males leads to constant harassment of females, which causes stress, hiding behavior, and shortened lifespan.
