Fin rot is one of the most common diseases in goldfish and one of the most preventable. It’s caused by bacterial infection — and in almost every case, the underlying cause is poor water quality. A goldfish with healthy fins in a clean, well-maintained tank rarely develops fin rot. This guide covers how to identify it, treat it, and stop it from coming back.
What Is Fin Rot?
Fin rot is a bacterial infection that causes progressive deterioration of the fins and tail. The bacteria responsible — most commonly Aeromonas, Pseudomonas, and Flavobacterium — are present in virtually all aquariums at low levels. They become a problem when a fish’s immune system is compromised by stress, injury, or poor water quality, allowing the bacteria to take hold in fin tissue.
What Fin Rot Looks Like
- Frayed, ragged, or uneven fin edges
- White, grey, or brown discoloration along the fin margins
- Fins appearing shorter than normal as tissue is lost
- Red streaks or inflammation at the base of the fins in more advanced cases
- In severe cases, the infection can progress to the body (body rot)
Early fin rot is easy to miss — the first sign is often just slightly ragged fin edges that look like minor physical damage. Check fins regularly under good lighting. Fin rot progresses from the edges inward, while physical damage tends to be more irregular and doesn’t spread.

What Causes Fin Rot in Goldfish
- Poor water quality (most common): Elevated ammonia or nitrite suppresses the immune system and damages fin tissue directly, creating entry points for bacteria
- Overcrowding: High stocking density increases waste production and stress
- Fin-nipping tankmates: Physical damage to fins creates entry points for bacterial infection
- Stress: Chronic stress from incompatible tankmates, inadequate tank size, or frequent temperature swings weakens immune response
- Pre-existing injury: Any fin damage that isn’t healing in clean water can develop into fin rot
How to Treat Fin Rot
Step 1: Improve Water Quality First
This is the most important step. Test water for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Perform a 25–50% water change if water quality is poor. In many mild cases of fin rot, improving water quality alone is enough to stop progression and allow the fins to begin healing. Without addressing water quality, medication will not produce lasting results.

Step 2: Remove the Cause
Identify and address what caused the fin rot. If tankmates are fin-nipping, separate them. If the tank is overcrowded, reduce stocking. If filtration is inadequate, upgrade it. See our Best Aquarium Filters guide.
Step 3: Treat With Medication (Moderate to Severe Cases)
Mild fin rot caught early often resolves with water quality improvements alone. For moderate to severe cases — significant fin loss, red inflammation, or spreading infection — antibacterial medication is needed. Commonly used options include erythromycin-based treatments, kanamycin-based treatments (such as Kanaplex by Seachem), and broad-spectrum antibacterial products formulated for fin and body infections. Verify current product formulations before purchasing, as product names and active ingredients can change over time.
Remove activated carbon from the filter before treating. Follow dosing instructions for the full course. Do not stop treatment early even if fins appear to be improving.
Step 4: Continue Water Changes During Treatment
Perform regular partial water changes throughout treatment to maintain water quality and remove waste. Re-dose medication after each water change as directed.
Step 5: Monitor Recovery
Fin tissue can regrow after fin rot. New fin growth often appears clear or translucent before gradually regaining normal color — this is normal and not a cause for concern. Regrown fins may be slightly different in texture than the original. Recovery time depends on the severity of the infection and the quality of water conditions maintained during healing. Observe closely during the first 48–72 hours after starting treatment for signs of improvement or worsening.

- Maintain water quality: Test weekly and perform regular 25–50% water changes
