Bristlenose Pleco Diseases & Health

Bristlenose plecos are hardy fish when kept in well-maintained aquariums, but they are susceptible to the same diseases that affect most freshwater fish — and a few conditions that are more specific to plecos and bottom dwellers. The majority of health problems in bristlenose plecos are directly linked to poor water quality, inadequate diet, or inappropriate substrate. This guide covers the most common bristlenose pleco health issues, how to identify them, and how to treat them.

Prevention First

Most bristlenose pleco health problems are preventable with good husbandry:

  • Maintain stable water parameters — ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm, nitrate below 20 ppm

Common Bristlenose Pleco Diseases

Ich (White Spot Disease)

Symptoms: Small white spots resembling grains of salt on the body, fins, and gills. Affected fish may flash (rub against surfaces) and show labored breathing if gills are involved.

Cause: The parasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. Highly contagious and spreads rapidly. Often triggered by temperature drops or stress from poor water quality.

Treatment: Gradually raise water temperature to 86°F (30°C) over 48 hours to accelerate the parasite's life cycle. Remove activated carbon from the filter and treat the entire tank with an ich-specific medication. Continue treatment for the full recommended course even after spots disappear. Note: plecos can be sensitive to some medications — use half the recommended dose initially and monitor closely.

Fin Rot

Symptoms: Ragged, fraying, or receding fin edges. May appear white or red at the margins. In severe cases, fin tissue deteriorates back toward the body.

Cause: Bacterial infection, typically secondary to poor water quality, physical injury, or stress. Plecos kept in tanks with sharp decorations or coarse substrate are more prone to fin damage that leads to infection.

Treatment: Improve water quality immediately with a water change. Remove any sharp decorations. Treat with an antibacterial medication if the condition is progressing. Remove activated carbon before medicating. Mild cases often resolve with water quality improvement alone.

Bloat

Symptoms: Swollen or distended abdomen. The fish may appear lethargic and lose interest in food. In severe cases, scales may begin to protrude (pineconing), indicating dropsy.

Cause: Overfeeding protein-rich foods, constipation, bacterial infection, or internal parasites. Bristlenose plecos fed too much bloodworm or sinking pellet relative to vegetable matter are prone to digestive bloat.

Treatment: For dietary bloat, fast the fish for 2–3 days and then resume feeding with a higher proportion of blanched vegetables and peas. Peas act as a mild laxative. If bloat is accompanied by pineconing, treat as dropsy — isolate in a hospital tank, treat with antibiotics, and consider Epsom salt baths. Prognosis for advanced dropsy is poor.

Barbel Erosion

Symptoms: Shortened, stubby, or missing barbels (the whisker-like sensory organs around the mouth). May appear red or inflamed at the base.

Cause: Sharp or coarse substrate that damages the sensitive barbels as the pleco forages along the bottom. Bacterial infection can follow physical damage. This is one of the most common and most preventable pleco health issues.

Hole in the Head (HITH)

Symptoms: Small pits, erosions, or mucus-filled cavities around the head and along the lateral line. Progresses slowly over weeks or months.

Cause: Associated with poor water quality, prolonged use of activated carbon, nutritional deficiencies, and in some cases the flagellate parasite Hexamita. More common in plecos kept in tanks with high nitrate levels.

Treatment: Improve water quality with increased water change frequency. Remove activated carbon. Improve diet with varied, vitamin-rich foods. If Hexamita is suspected, treat with metronidazole. Early cases often resolve with husbandry improvements alone.

Internal Parasites

Symptoms: Wasting despite a good appetite, stringy white or clear feces, sunken belly, or lethargy. More common in wild-caught plecos than captive-bred specimens.

Cause: Internal parasitic infections — worms or flagellates. Can be introduced via live foods or from wild-caught fish.

Treatment: Treat with an antiparasitic medication containing praziquantel or levamisole for worms, or metronidazole for flagellate infections. Remove activated carbon before medicating.

Fungal Infections

Symptoms: White, cotton-like fuzzy patches on the body, fins, or around wounds. Distinct from the normal white biofilm that appears on new driftwood.

Cause: Fungal infections typically develop secondary to physical injury, fin rot, or poor water quality. Wounds that are not kept clean are particularly susceptible.

Treatment: Improve water quality. Treat with an antifungal aquarium medication. Remove activated carbon before medicating.

Hospital Tank

Whenever possible, treat sick bristlenose plecos in a separate hospital tank. This protects the biological filter in the display aquarium, allows accurate medication dosing, and reduces stress on healthy tank inhabitants. A simple 10–20 gallon hospital tank is sufficient for most juvenile and adult bristlenose plecos, provided water quality is maintained. Include a sponge filter, heater, and a piece of driftwood for the pleco to rasp during recovery.

A Note on Medications and Plecos

Plecos and other scaleless or armored fish can be more sensitive to certain medications than scaled fish. When using copper-based treatments or strong antibiotics, start at half the recommended dose and monitor closely before increasing. Always remove activated carbon from the filter before adding any medication, as carbon absorbs medication and reduces its effectiveness.

Health FAQs

Why is my bristlenose pleco pale or losing color?

Pale coloration in bristlenose plecos is usually a stress response — most commonly caused by poor water quality, bright lighting with no hiding spots, or being harassed by tank mates. Check water parameters, ensure the pleco has a cave to retreat to, and reduce lighting intensity if necessary. Plecos are naturally darker and more active in low-light conditions.

Why is my bristlenose pleco not moving?

Bristlenose plecos are nocturnal and spend much of the day motionless inside their cave or attached to a surface. This is normal behavior. If the pleco is unresponsive, lying on its side, or showing other symptoms, check water parameters immediately and look for signs of disease.

Can bristlenose plecos get ich from other fish?

Yes. Ich is highly contagious and spreads to all fish in the tank regardless of species. If any fish in the tank shows ich symptoms, treat the entire tank. Quarantine new fish before adding them to an established aquarium to prevent introduction of ich and other pathogens.

When should I see a vet?

If a fish is not responding to treatment after the full recommended course, if multiple fish are dying rapidly, or if you cannot identify the cause of illness, consult an aquatic veterinarian. Misidentifying a disease and using the wrong medication can worsen the situation.
